Date Posted:12/12/2003 11:43:07Copy HTML We are thinking about a holiday in Madeira (Portugal). Does anybody know how thong / g-string friendly it is likely to be? Any recommendations and suggestions welome.

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:12/13/2003 10:40:32Copy HTML Although I've not been to the area myself, it is one of those places I would expect to be at the very least thong-tolerant... you should be fine... but I wouldn't necessarily expect to have a huge amount of thong company... though I would imagine that could vary depending on the season and temperature... I hope you have fun! Be sure to write a report to let us know just how thong friendly it is! |

"It is not unusual for women to sunbathe topless in the beaches of Portugal, and there are several naturist beaches too. Thong bikinis are acceptable throughout the country's beaches." |

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:03/28/2021 08:16:22Copy HTML Ancient topic, but maybe someone will search for info one day... Me and my GF are on Madeira since December, visiting the beach in Calheta every now and then. Skimpy bikinis on girls are the norm, thongs very common, topless not unusual. For men trunks are default, lots of speedos as well, but since there are many visitors from various parts of Europe, anything goes. I don't seem to attract much attention in my thongs, people tolerate everything here. I've only seen once another guy in thongs and he was also ignored by everybody else. |

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:02/20/2024 01:02:02Copy HTML I'm off to Madeira in April, staying in an AirBnB with a shared pool.
Anyone have any experience of thonging poolside (as opposed to on a beach)?
Also, as a general comment, are Speedos more common/ accepted? If thonging isn't going to be appropriate, I'd at least like to wear Speedos.
Thanks |

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:02/20/2024 01:48:34Copy HTML From my experience of wearing small suits in Europe in general I’d say you definitely won’t have any problem wearing a speedo in Madeira. I’d also say that you can definitely wear something much smaller without any problems - a rio suit with a 1/2 or 3/4 back or even a thong or g-string - at both pool or beach.
I generally go with as small a suit as I feel comfortable with at first (normally a Skinzwear or Joe Snyder rio suit) and then switch to smaller if no adverse comments after day 1 or even before day 1 is out. |

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:02/20/2024 04:11:32Copy HTML Best beach to go thonging (and swimming) is Machico in the east. You will see many girls with thongs there.

Re:Portugal - Madeira Date Posted:04/16/2024 05:55:39Copy HTML I can re-confirm my report from 3 years ago with little updates: thong bikinis on young local girls seem to be the norm nowadays. Conservative locals will wear a bikini which covers max 50% of their bottoms. Tourists wear what they are used to wear back at home, so wide range of everything. Half of men still in boring shorts, the rest in tight speedo-like suits. I haven't seen any other guy in thongs for the last couple of weeks on Calheta beach, but there were few guys with swim briefs revealing quite a bit on the back. No reaction from anyone for me lying down or walking around in different thong styles, most of them quite revealing. So all in all: good place to visit and bake your buns :-)
