Im just curious how many runners here wear thongs or whatever they find best for training for marathons or running in general. I have done a 2 full marathons and many half marathons and I have found a thong is a must for me. If so what thongs do you find works best?

I have tried everything for running and found the Joe Synder Rio thong is the best for me hands down. I have tried g strings and for some reason they dig a little too much for me and they are somewhat loose which isn’t good for running for me. I’ve tried wider traditional thongs and found its too much material in between my cheeks. The happy medium is that Rio thong because it’s nice and tight, the front is very narrow which don’t get in the way of my legs moving. I wear shorts over my thong but they are loser shorts. I have tried regular speedos or bikinis and they just wedgie so much on me I don’t even bother anymore.

I have seen at our local running store they have running thongs for women and of course nothing but tight shorts for guys. To me I feel like have way less resistance wearing a thong for running than I would in standard running shorts with a liner. Just curious what the runners here wear.

I'm an avid runner - I ran 1,200 miles last year just to give you an idea and I wear a thong just about every time. Best has been the Papi cotton thong. It's one of the more athletic thongs I have. Ran two marathons with a Papi thong underneath. They're durable, they last long and you can prance around the locker room in them and it's like you're just wearing athletic underwear. Here's a link.... https://www.amazon.com/papi-3-Pack-Cotton-Stretch-Thong/dp/B00V0NKF0Q?th=1 The JAXFSTK g-string is also super comfy but the small string can dig into you so I'll only wear that for shorter runs. https://www.amazon.com/JAXFSTK-Spandex-G-String-Jockstrap-Underwear/dp/B01LYYUGFM?ref_=w_bl_sl_ap_ap_web_15526128011 Sometimes in summer I'll just go without underwear sometimes too. In winter (I live in Minnesota) I wear a Papi cotton thong and a pair of boxer shorts over them as an extra layer.

I often wear a thong with my running shorts, my favorite is the soffe ranger shorts with the lining removed.  The lining to me isn't supportive enough and not comfortable for running, so the thong works a lot better.  My go-to is a joe sndyer regular thong (not bulge, or anything like that).  They offer great support, and I can match the thong color to the shorts.

On the few occasions I've run in only a thong on the beach its also been a regular joe snyder thong.  I almost always find something smaller for tanning / swimming, but have not found anything better for being active!

I always wear a JM Skinz microfiber thong under my running tights.

Thongzo, those g strings look like they will be pretty comfortable to run in! Like you said maybe for the shorter runs but I like how they don’t abruptly turn into a string. That’s the area I have issues with when I’ve run in a pouch type G string. It just doesn’t work for me and running. I’ll have to try those out!

Completely agree that wearing a thing whilst running is super comfortable, I usually wear a JS regular thong under loose running shorts or lined shorts if it is cooler (its never very cold here). In warmer weather I usually wear a thong and only go support free on shorter runs. An absolute joy I discovered a few years ago is running only in a thong, I know others have been doing this for some time. I'm fortunate I can find two CO beaches for this that can give a few KMs that are perfect when joined up to a run. It's a feeling of freedom that must be tried. It's like running naked but with the requisite support. Depending on the beach I will either carry my shorts or stash them if I can loose the shoes as well. One of the beaches has very hard sand so I've found it necessary to run in shoes (so just a thong with running shoes) this felt odd the first few times but now feels more like being a bit taller and in a thong at the same time, it's very liberating!

I am curious, who does or has run in a thong only, without shorts or pants? How was that for you? Get any back lash?

Yes people run in just a thong. For many years I ran the beach in just a thong and a cap, three days a week, prior to injuring my ankle a couple of years ago.  Ran the beach in a thong for about fifteen to twenty years.

You asked about "backlash":  Now and again someone would say or shout something negative, but normally there was no hassle at all.  Normally the comments, waves and smiles were friendly and supporting.
I never take a camera or phone to the beach, but over the years members of this board found photos on the web, and sent them to me asking if the picture were of me.  Some were, and some were not me. So now I have a few random pictures of me out running in a thong, or stretching after a run that were taken by others. I will post a few to my profile.

Notably, unless I was posting for the picture, the photos people have found that were taken of me are all taken from the rear, as I disappear into the distance. Even I have difficulty with determining if it is me in some of the pictures. By the time they realized there was a man in a thong, and they got their camera out, I was past them and going away.

When I was still racing, (that's more than a dozen years ago), I ran in very short unlined shorts with a thong under the shorts. I did not like the liners so cut them out and just wore a thong. Some like the famous OnionSkin shorts were more than a bit transparent, so a person could tell I was wearing a thong under the shorts. I did not care for the built in liners on the IM OnionSkin shorts, so mostly cut them out. I often kept the matching shorts and appropriate thong of the right color together, on the same hanger. A blue thong under blue shorts made it look all one system.

For running I don't like a thong that is triangular in front, i.e. has side seams going up the natural fold each side of the pubic hair. I prefer a narrow cut, closer to a teardrop, so there is no chafing at the top of the legs, on the part of the skin that is folding and unfolding with every step. Something like the old prevail-sport NorthStar or old skinz M14 cut in shape, but in soft fabric. Some of my racing shorts even had a built in thong.

I got many complements along the way. I can't remember any negative comments about running shorts and thongs, even when the shorts were transparent and the thong very visible. It may help that most people don't criticize someone who is faster, and round here races start soon after dawn, so don't tend to attract the sort of person who makes public social comments about other people's fashion choices. The people at races are runners or families of runners.

I always work out at the gym or run outside in a thong and tights. Holds everything in place, and gives absolute freedom of movement! The only thing that can be a problem for me, is the seam connecting the thong strap to the front piece, which can sometimes be chafing a lot in the perineum area, when running. That happens almost exclusively when I'm newly shaved, and some thongs are worse than others. (Even the supposedly seamless thongs have that connecting seam.) Anyone else had this problem?

Yeah the JAXFSTK g-strings are the most comfortable gear I've worn. I love them!

I wear thongs for everything. The best thongs (i.e. not g-string) I have are "Brave Person" thong with the logo on the left hip. At least for me, the pouch is a good size, and has some give. I wouldn't mind a bit more room, but they're very good as is. It's barely big enough, but I love that, regardless of whether I point up or down, I fit and things stay in place. The thong itself stays in place. The sides stay in place. And most importantly, the strap doesn't chaff. A lot of other thongs I have are fine throughout a workout, or even most of a day. Others are only fine if you get the perfect size. I have these Brave Person thongs in US medium and large, and both are fine. The material is fantastic as well; not the softest and sexiest material, but very nice, and very durable. They're also generally not see through, which I prefer. I have had most of mine for well over 3 years now, and while the logo wore off long ago, they're still my daily underwear. I will say, I don't currently do a lot of running, but I have run wearing the Brave Person thongs. I've done considerable bicycle rides wearing them. Lots of hiking, working on cars, home remodeling, etc... Always comfortable. I used to avoid thongs for long camping trips that involved a lot of hiking, because of sweat and issues with the strap. I was recently at a high adventure camp in West Virginia, in ridiculous heat and humidity, and these thongs were absolutely amazing. I shave, and despite the sticky weather and high amounts of activity, I never one thought about my underwear. I had NO chaffing with my genitals or anything. I brought body glide just in case, but didn't need it. FWIW, besides hiking 6-10 miles per day, we did mountain biking, BMX biking, ropes courses, rock climbing, etc... I'm trying to think of others that are close. I know I have a few. Oddly, some of them, I don't care for as much because the front is too big, and things flop around, or otherwise just don't look right. I have one that I absolutely love, and hugs things like a glove, but it is most definitely a downward pointing pouch, which in and of itself isn't really a problem, but I find myself adjusting it at times, at least when I'm wearing tight jeans.

Back in high school when I ran track with those high split shorts (the kind with like a half inch inseam), they had built in underwear, so I wouldn't need to wear anything. I imagine the thong would be the same as that, should be more free, and non-binding.

I run a lot and I always wear thongs (or occasionally a thong bodysuit) under my shorts. If the shorts are lined when I buy them I cut the liner out, but mostly favour the tight lycra type of shorts. My favourites are OMM ones which have a small mesh panel at the back below the waistband for ventilation, which coincidentally shows off my thong. :) I've run everything up to 100K ultramarathons in them with no significant chafing issues so far. I do prefer to wear microfibre or modal ones than cotton though. I've even worn a neon-coloured swimsuit thong under tights for a night race as I knew it would illuminate in the beam of other's headtorches... I've only run in JUST a thong on a couple of occasions along the length of Alvor beach in Portugal.

Despite laying out often in the smallest suits, I've never had the courage to run in just a thong. I've never seen anyone run in just a thong until last week during my trip to Venice/MDR beach. And I ended up seeing TWO separate women run in thongs on the beach at different times! Both were very fit and it was encouraging to see. JM, Maybe the trend you started is going to catch on along the West Coast!

Sorry wrong link posted earlier. This is a very video someone posted to the internet a few years ago, of a man in a thong who ran by them on Fort Lauderdale beach.
Someone else spotted it and asked if it was me.
It was, so I captured it and re-posted on Vimeo.
This is on the return, near Sunrise, so probably about 3 miles in to a 5 mile run, depending where I turned around.

My morning run in a thong is coming to an end as overnight temps drop. My favorites are the light ice silk and tan through thongs from Ali Express. They are so light it’s like running nude, and I always wear a dark color so if I’m spotted, it’s obvious I am not nude. I run at 0515, to be alone, and during the warm months to avoid the daytime heat and any possible commotion from neighbors. The cops don’t care, I’ve run through intersections where they have stopped and wait for me to run through. Every so often I come across another runner, or dog walker, but without daylight I remain unknown. It’s been a great season despite the pandemic. Now I’m going to be wearing a short tank and bikini. It always feels a little weird at first, but sooner than I like it will be tights and a windbreaker.

Pikeman, I have found some mesh spandex shorts which work great in slightly cooler temperature.  I like to wear a thong underneath, which depending on how long a shirt you wear might be visible.  The "BravePerson" shorts are pretty long, come down to my knee so they add quite a bit of warmth while still allowing to show off a thong.

Where I am I have to decide if I'm going to run or go to the beach, so when the weather is warm enough I hit the beach.  The rest of the year I try to run a few times a week, and generally the weather jumps cold enough that I need to wear tights.  I try to find tights when it's cold that make it obvious I have a thong underneath -- just lets my exhibition flow a bit even with colder temps. I don't think it's very visible -- others would have to really look for it.  When it gets really cold and I have to wear my running jacket then this fun goes away, but gotta be warm!  Still, I've really found running in tights is so much more comfortable.

Not sure where else to post this one but I just signed up for a nude 5k! I'm super excited. This is a bucket list item for me. I know it's not really thong-related but it's just something I wanted to share. It's going to be at a very warm location later this year and I can't wait! Has anyone ever done a nude race before? So excited to run in nothing but sneakers, a hat, and tons of suntan oil!

I can't run nude. Just can't find the right gait and it all flops around very uncomfortably. Having said that, I only tried a half-dozen times or so.

I usually train in a zonbailon thong. It's a very masculine design and cut, with either dryskin 3/4 meggings or devops 3/4 meggings. The dryskin reveals the thong silhouette but I found running in this attire to be best.

For shorter runs I wear a g string or small thong under some unlined shorts. It’s the best for full range and no wedgies while running. Now for marathon training, I use to wear a rio Joe synder thong under some running shorts but when you get up around 7-20 miles the inside of my legs start chaffing and get raw. For the long runs I switched over to wearing a g string or same rio thong under some tight bike shorts. Then throw regular shorts I’ve that. It was the way to go on distance running. I couple times I’ve been to the beach where I’m going for a long walk in just a thong and nobody around, I’ve started jogging. I really liked the feel of just running in a thong. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to try it.

I recently bought an item which is probably best described as a thong / skirt. It's a good compromise between running in just a thong and wearing a thong under shorts. I've posted some pictures in my album. I haven't plucked up courage to wear it out running locally (I know too many people) but when I eventually go on holiday I plan to use it then. Until then, it's very comfortable for lounging around the house.

As per Blackthong23, my favoured thong for running at the moment is the Joe Snyder Rio thong under running tights, although any thong that provides decent support without too much forward projection seems to work well for me.
