Date Posted:01/03/2012 01:16:16Copy HTML I remember seeing Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) for the first time about ten years ago in Hawaii. Nowadays, you can find SUP just about anywhere you can find a body of water.
As I am motivating myself to get in shape for the spring/summer, I came across SUP-ing as a way to be in a thong out on the water. I think it would be a great way to steer out of beaches/rivers/lakes that are a little too crowded. Has anyone had any experience SUP-ing in a thong? |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:01/07/2012 11:00:32Copy HTML NO but I did it while wearing a rio while on vacation in Fiji.It is a great work out for the core and legs as balancing is a lot more difficult than it seems.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:03/28/2012 09:27:49Copy HTML Agree with pkthong, the balance needed to successfully SUP does enhance the core. I like it as an alternative to sea kayaking. I did read that someone had combined SUP with Yoga, which would really be amazing. When I do SUP it's with a rash vest and thong one piece.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/25/2013 06:43:22Copy HTML Had an amazing thonging experience at range pond in Maine today. I rented a SUP board and hit the water. It was great way to get some sun and a workout at same time. It felt amazing to feel so free. Lots of kayakers that just pass you buy along the edge of the water and no hassles from anyone. I am definitely hooked on combining these two past times.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/25/2013 07:19:23Copy HTML I have thonged on a Stand Up Paddle Board.
Like running, or any other active activity, the reactions to a man in a thong seem far more positive than if just standing around or laying out in a thong. Probably the most positive reactions were at Columbus Day Regatta in Miami, where thongs, topless and drinking are common. Well rewarded with strings of beads, a bit like Mardi Gras, free drinks and offers of food. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/24/2014 02:41:11Copy HTML Spent an hour on Sebago Lake in Maine this morning on my SUP. I was in my muscleskins poser in pink. Beautiful morning paddling into the sun then returning. The water was like glass and temps in high sixties for the lake water. This is a terrific way to combine exercise and thonging.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/27/2014 05:29:36Copy HTML Spent another morning on the waters of Sebago Lake on my board in a thong. Beautiful day up here and the marine patrol was out early checking for pfd's. I think that they just let it go because they did not know how to deal with me in a thong. I got the sense that they saw me through binoc's then approached slowly. They were about 75' away when they asked if I had a vest. I was surprised that I needed one, and will probably consider one to at least strap to the board. Anyway it was exciting to have an interaction and a positive one at that. I was wearing an ultimate exposure thong. Purple with polka dots and a yellow tail. I was surprised at the value of this brand. Lycra is comfy and stretches nicely. Fabric in front is not see through when wet.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/27/2014 09:41:04Copy HTML Yes, we have the same problem here when in a kayak, they come by to make sure we have a life jacked on board, even though most rotor molded kayaks are, in an of themselves, and unsinkable life raft.
Off the beach they don't ask for PDF's on paddleboards, but during the Columbus Day regatta we take an elastic bungy and strap one to the board just so we don't get hassled by the swarms of cops in boats trying to ogle thongs and tittles. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/06/2014 02:52:38Copy HTML I am a triathlete and I frequently do open water swimming in the east TN lakes. More recently, I purchased two paddle boards and I also add a little bit of that to my workouts when I have time. Open water swimming is something one can do in minimal swimwear (thongs, speedos, whatever) and not really be noticed. I've done that a few times. Not so for paddle boarding. I usually do my paddle boarding in the speedo 5" sides, which actually fit a lot like a square cut type men's swimsuit. They don't get as much notice as the more minimal solar styles with the 1" sides, but for paddle boarding, it seems a reasonable compromise to wear these. If I did this on the beaches or canals of Florida, I'd certainly have no trouble finding places to paddle in a thong. Not so much in TN. Yesterday, I decided to combine the two sports by swimming a couple of miles up a slow-moving lake while towing a paddle board, then jumping on it and paddling back. It wasn't my intent, but surprisingly, that drew a lot of attention as I first swam up the river, then about 1.5 hours later paddled back. Everyone noticed me in both directions, I suppose becuase one doesn't often see swimmers out in the middle of the lake towing paddle boards, nor guys paddle boarding in speedos. The main people that appeared to notice were a large group of hispanics at a picnic table on the shore of the park where I was. They were singing and yelling about things the whole time, but it seemed to increase in volume and tempo as I passed both times. I didn't understand what they were saying and I really did not dare to look in their direction as I passed. It didn't seem hostile to me, but I find it odd they would take notice. Didn't get any trouble from the boaters and fishermen, but I did keep my distance out of the respect of not scaring off the fish. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/06/2014 03:25:17Copy HTML TN seems to be a pretty conservative part of the USA.....
It must be hard to compromise between being yourself and wear a thong or a string; and not attracting too much of a negative reaction. thanks God I live in Australia. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/07/2014 12:58:21Copy HTML John: unfortunately, you are right. At least in the UK, speedos are still considered with in the norm for recreational swimming, even if only worn by a minority. I say this because we were in the Disney waterparks during October several years ago and they were filled with people who'd flown over from England and Scotland. Many of the men were wearing speedos and I was basically indistiguishable from them except for accent difference.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/07/2014 09:02:25Copy HTML I go open water swimming at Salford Quays here (near Manchester). It's never the warmest water as its very deep and set in quite an urban environment (surrounded on all sides by offices, apartment blocks and retail); which is OK as you can hire wetsuits. There are always some of the more experienced and hardy swimmers in just swimsuits or tri-suits.
I usually swim with other members of our running club who also compete, or aspire to compete in triathlons, and one evening last year turned up with 3 others to swim only to find that all the wetsuits were out on hire and I'd be waiting a while. The girl at the hire desk suggested as it was warm I would be good to swim in just my swimsuit. I decided to be brave and give it a go. Luckily I had a HOM micro style suit (quite a brief bikini style: but not too tiny as I'm sure many of you know). It was still somewhat daunting. The quayside was busy with swimmers getting in and out, onlookers and friends / family, as well as the many passers-by you get at the quays (it's very near to the Lowry arts centre and retail outlet, and to Media City where the BBC and ITV have studios etc.). I had easily the briefest swimsuit of the session. Additionally, there were the other three club members (two female, one male), and I find I'm more self-conscious in the presence of friends rather than strangers. I manned up and came out from the changing tent. Thankfully there was very little reaction at the time and I found that apart from the initial cold of the water the swimming was as enjoyable as with the wetsuit (more freedom of movement but less buoyancy). There was some light-hearted fun poked at my 'skimpy budgie-smugglers' on the way home in the car, but no real grief. Just lucky that I had taken HOM briefs instead of my skimpier JS bikini, or any of the thong swimsuits I have also worn under the wetsuit at these sessions…. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/08/2014 03:57:03Copy HTML nospam_TN1,
And Australia unfortunately is becoming more like the USA, last year at Wet 'n Wild in Queensland with my kids I was the only one wearing a 5cm speedos with the logo of the company I work for on the back and everyone around me was staring at me at the queues of the water rides like if I was from a different planet.... Most of the other dads were wearing long board shorts to the ankles and cotton short sleeve tops. The whole thing made me feel uncomfortable and couldn't find anything better to counteract this feeling but to friendly talk to anyone I could in the queue; I think it helped a lot and I could break a bit of ice. After that there was even a younger dad who asked me to ride the slide with one of his sons because he also had 2 boys as me and the ride device was only for 2 people. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/08/2014 08:07:41Copy HTML Yes I've done Wet'N'Wild in Queensland three times, two times in briefs, and once in board shorts.
I only wore board shorts because I arrived there without my briefs, which I intended to wear, and only had a blue thong on under my white shorts. Even though I wore the shorts, my thong was certainly visible, and yes people looked! Too many kids to go in just the thong - my confidence was not high enough that particular day. The other two times I happily wore a 1"side rio bikini. First time I was around 18-20yo, and briefs where lots more common. Still, they were small, and got plenty of sideways glances. Second time (probably ten years later) was much the same, except nowhere near as many others wearing them. They did sell them in the gift shop at the time I noticed. If I went tomorrow, I'd wear a similar bikini, and take a thong just in case... |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/08/2014 02:21:37Copy HTML I paddle board too. On Lake Austin, in Austin TX. I wear an N2N bikini, but wouldn't have the nerve to wear a thong. I would expect too much attention from jerks on jet-skis, who are already assholey enough with their wakes. The wake-boats throw bigger wakes, but you have more time to turn into them. Like you I would expect too much attention from bored brats.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:02/13/2015 06:07:22Copy HTML I own two SUP's and live in east TN. I do plenty of workouts with them on the local lakes in minimal speedos with no problem. I generally stay on the main channel and avoid small coves whenever venturing into them would put me uncomfortably close to the fishermen in small boats. One of my favorite workouts on the SUP's is to start out by swimming upstream, towing the SUP with both standup and kayak paddles behind me. After I get tired of swimming, I then get on board and alternately paddle with the SUP and kayak paddles.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:02/14/2015 07:15:14Copy HTML SlidingG: what I meant is that I actually sit down on the paddle board, effectively using it as a kayak whenever I use the kayak paddle. The advantage it has over the SUP paddle is that I can paddle at a much higher rate. Each individual stroke is less powerful, but you are always pulling, so it generally goes faster, particularly if you are paddling into a headwind. However, it is no longer a whole body exercise as it is standing up.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:02/16/2015 02:56:05Copy HTML Tracks better, too, I'll bet. Though as an old white-water canoer, I don't have to switch sides with the SUP paddle as most folks do, so that tracks well, too. Wish I still had that old kayak paddle, though, would be fun to try your technique, and kneeling with it, as well. One of these days I'll probably break down and wear a thong out on the SUP, too, though as a sworn non-exhibitionist, I'm still a little hesitant. Long, open-water swims is one thing, always in a Speedo thong, but flaunting your bare ass so publicly on an SUP is bound to attract attention! At least more than I like.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:02/18/2015 06:50:03Copy HTML Yeah, as much as I'd like to wear a thong when getting out on a SUP, on Lake Austin the yahoo powerboat crowd would be a problem. Wakes are enough of a challenge, but I wouldn't put it beyond some of these people to get way too close at speed.Right now Lake Travis is so low that SUP would be great, and in a thong as well since so few boats can launch and the open water areas are reduced. There are small sailboats but that's a whole nicer mentality and certainly no collision hazard.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/02/2015 01:37:04Copy HTML Read my recently posted "Thong with friends- experiences?"
I had my first go on an SUP on this same holiday (as mentioned above) with these guys. One of the others, who regularly wears the speedo, owns the SUP. I went out on it in my Aussie Bum. I figure if I do the pier jump in my thong as I outlined, I'll be able (an probably dared/encouraged) to paddle the SUP in my thong also. They won't let me NOT do it I think! I do everything else in front of them in my 1.5" Aussie Bums, so they will be at me to wear the thongs just to see if I will. And I will ;). I will absolutely love it too! |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/06/2016 09:08:18Copy HTML My daughter and I took a SUP yoga class from a husband and wife team. We both wore thongs. The husband instructor wore a speedo brief and the wife was wearing a cheeky bikini. I was a little worried about how revealing my daughter and my suits were, but with all of the twisting, turning, and falling into the water, most women ended up with their suits pulled up and bottoms exposed.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/11/2016 10:22:51Copy HTML My wife and I love SUP'ing. I have been reading up on the local authorities' views of thongs, as I will likely wear one publicly for the first time on my paddle board. The combination of core strength and balance required make it a favorite pursuit of ours; like swimming, there is no impact, but the resistance is there. I have a 12' 6" ATX Maverick (an older race board) and frequently go 5-7 miles with our dog or one of the kids. Consider trying out a "planing hull" AND a "displacement" hull for comparison before buying one. My wife has the simpler planing type and prefers the maneuverability; mine is the displacement type and turns slower, but keeps up with most similarly proportioned kayaks. I would post pictures, but cannot figure out how....

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:01/15/2018 05:00:48Copy HTML I bought an inflatable paddle board specifically to get some
exercise while wearing a thong. It has
been great getting out and exploring the local area, getting some exercise, and
some sun. Other than the 1st time
taking it out when I wore briefs, I’ve worn a thong every time without
issue.
There are a number of parks in the area with water
access. I have to inflate the SUP each
time before taking it out and I do all the prep work in my short shorts then
strip down once I’ve gotten a little ways away from the park. I haven’t been bold enough yet to depart
& return to shore or inflate & deflate in just a thong. I don’t want to get any complaints since the
parks have attendants, and although thongs are legal I don’t want issues.
Definitely looking forward to warmer weather when I get
start getting out again!

I go for and swim a couple “laps” but it’s not much. I have really been thinking of exploring the SUP option and thonging on the lake to get some excersize, sun on both sides (and buns). I don’t have any expeerience in SUP but was wondering if more of you have been thinking of doing this too?

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:08/29/2018 02:26:04Copy HTML I just got a SUP with a kayak backrest so it does double duty. Took it out on Lake Travis, TX, and had no issues related to the thong. After I fell in the second time I took off the thong. The lake was about empty, but there are always people on shore. The wind came up pretty fierce, so I switched to the kayak config and I was as good as clothed then since the position is very modest.
The SUP/kayak config is much cooler than my inflatable kayak, which is like sitting in a blow-up kiddie pool. It is much less revealing though since you can't see that I'm nude until very close.
It's very enjoyable and a great workout!

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/01/2019 04:41:52Copy HTML I've owned two 12'6" fiberglass paddle boards for over 4 years, but only in the last 2 years started going on group outings focused on either open water swimming or paddle boarding. Since I live and TN where thongs are illegal and I'm very visible on a paddle board, I always opt for speedo briefs and not thongs. With the swimming group, there are usually several other guys in briefs, but I'm the only one ever serving as a guide/pilot while wearing a brief, but the experience is always a good one.
More recently, I started doing a group 4+ mile informal paddle race and would get there a bit ahead of the scheduled time and swim while towing the board behind. Again, wearing speedo briefs the whole time. I was the only one there male or female in briefs, but everyone was friendly and didn't give me any flak. I was also the only one with a 12'6" board (slow and considered entry level by competitive paddle boarders), and I started off kind of in the back of the pack and gradually moved forward to finish in the middle. Since I'm type 1 diabetic and using CGM (continuous glucose monitoring), the work out with the paddle board group is very compatible, since my warmup of open water swimming is at my own pace and not any longer than I want, and I'm back on the grid by the time the actual paddle board race starts. Problem is that CGM's don't transmit through the water, so I only know if I have low blood sugar because I feel bad, not because I get an alarm. I've started wearing the sensor on my butt and the speedo does a great job of protecting it from aquatic sheer. Unfortunately, this also tends to prevent me from wanting to wear a thong because that would leave the sensor uncovered and at risk of loss due to aquatic sheer or being knocked off.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/02/2019 12:39:55Copy HTML JM - I can and do sometimes put the CGM sensor on my arm, and with that I can wear what ever type of bottom I want, but here where I live, the basic Speedo brief is as minimal as I want to go unless I'm in a private setting. Other important point is that I have to protect the sensors no matter where I put them, so if they're on my arms or abdominal area, I usually end up wearing tight rash guard type tops more often than I want.
However, if I'm just casually laying around or walking around or even just standing in the water, they don't need to be covered and protected. If I am doing that, the arm is the preferred location. I wouldn't want one on my butt while wearing a thong in public or on my abdominal area when I'm going shirtless. With the sensor on my butt, I don't think a cheeky type swimsuit would work at all because the bottom of it might want to go right where the sensor is and end up putting pressure on it. By contrast, a thong wouldn't cover it at all, so it would neither protect it nor interfere with it. Under a Speedo is very a very discreet and protected location, but the key is that I actually have to wear the Speedo and not something smaller that doesn't completely cover it. These things are supposed to stay on for 10 days, so once I've selected the location, I'm committed to it for 10 days or until it falls off, wihch does occasionally happen. Putting them on my butt, I have to be very careful about selecting the best location. I usually end up putting on a pair of minimal black speedos and draw a sharpie outline around part of the top and bottom, so I can make sure it's not too high or low because too high means the waistband will get caught on it and too low means I'll be sitting on it. Then is the issue of back vs. side and I usually aim for about 45º from each.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/03/2019 01:26:38Copy HTML I started towards the end of last year. Paddle boarding is very popular on local lakes and ive seen a number of women paddling in a thong and near thongs. I currently rent a board for $10/hour but am planning on buying an inflatable so I can bring to various lakes in a car. If anyone can recommend an inflatable for a reasonable price let me know. I am now hooked on this. Its a great way to get sun in a thong with the benefit of a good core workout. I don't necessarily like working abs but this makes it enjoyable. its nice to be able to go on a lake with other SUP enthusiast, kayakers and sailboats. No motors makes it awesome. I brink a small plastic bag for sunscreen and my phone and when a get 50 yards out, I take off spandex shorts roll them up and place in bag and a way I go. Its also nice that they rent lockers for keys and such where u don't have to worry about losing. I def prefer it over kayaking as you get a better workout this way. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/05/2019 04:33:06Copy HTML I am new to the sport and wanted an inflatable SUP for easier transport and storage. I enjoy the one I selected an have been out on the lakes the past 2 months. I would recommend it. About $700

A MUST have accessory is an electric air pump. Don't break your back with a hand pump. I researched and enjoy this one. Used it about 6 times now an pumps it up in about 5 min. You get more power with this direct connection to the battery models.
About $90. Eagle Bravo High-Speed High-Pressure Inflation Pump for Inflatables - New for 2019

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/06/2019 08:58:05Copy HTML I just went with the fiberglass ATX 12'6" boards from the very beginning, which was about 4 years ago. The advantage is that they're very light -- roughly 30 lbs each. Disadvantage is that they are easy to damage or break. When I'm in those smaller rivers and creeks and reach a point where there are rocks or rapids, I know that I can go no further unless I pick it up and carry it, which I occasionally do.
In terms of performance, 12'6" is the slowest board of those permitted in competition and is considered somewhat entry level among those who compete. The faster ones are over 12'6", but if buying those or any others, it's important to choose one that has enough weight capacity for you and all the water, life jackets, and other things you plan to carry. Mine are actually rated for 300 lbs and I weigh about 210. The good thing about that is that I can even bring a small child (my youngest daughter or nephew) and it won't be unstable as long as they're laying down. When I'm going on long paddle trips that might involve strong winds, I usually carry a kayak paddle in addition to the SUP paddle. The reason for that is that although it's not the most ergonomic or comfortable position, it does allow me to make better progress against strong headwinds.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/06/2019 12:48:47Copy HTML I recently purchased two inflatable SUP for about $500 for the pair. Came with paddle, pump and bag. If you look you can find reasonably good deals, but first research the difference between 4" and 6" and various construction systems. I got two of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/162521403259 |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/27/2019 11:45:26Copy HTML I’ve been able to get out the last three days for a couple hours and hitting the Gulf of Mexico while we have been on vacation. I take the board to the beach get it set up and away I go in my thong. It’s been great to go up and down the coast of the island and see the wildlife and calmness of the experience. I’ve been going out in the mornings before it gets windy and choppy water and there have been very few people out walking the beach at that time. We are in a pretty isolated area and there’s not that many people or houses on the actual beach anyway. I’ll be going out again here shortly and I might see what I told my wife was a small fan club of ladies who hit the water early as well and we’re all lined up watching me as I passed by the other day. They all give me a very enthusiastic “good morning” after I agreed them first.
The early morning sun on my buns has been great.!

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/28/2019 09:46:02Copy HTML I just got a SUP and looking forward to experiencing the nearly all-over tan tomorrow! With Minneapolis in the 90's and heat index of 105, I doubt I will be the only one out there.

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/30/2019 01:28:11Copy HTML Got out today on the Chain of Lakes (Cedar, Isles, and Bde Maka Ska) in Minneapolis from about Noon to 5:00 pm. It was a beautiful day on the water. I was the only one wearing a thong who was paddling a board. Maybe Saturdays are a little too crowded for some. I carried a sarong and a small fabric flap that is the same color I could slip in the back of my suit when I paddled through the channels, when one could nearly walk from board to board because of the crowds. At least my bare butt wouldn't be in anyone's face if they were following too close. It was still pretty obvious that I was wearing a thong and most appeared to be cool with it. A few conversations with nearby paddlers went well with no reference to what I was wearing. A group of teen-agers elicited some positive comments from the gals while the guys simply referred to it as a Speedo. Apparently anything less than dork shorts fall into the category of "Speedo" for the ill-informed. Went past another group of folks on inflatables. They got kinda quiet and then I heard one of the women say to a guy in the group "Why would that make you mad? I think it's fine." Yeah for common-sense women! Most people either didn't seem to notice or just took it as another swimwear option. I think it helps to be physically fit and also to take time to adjust how the thong fits on your body. Like other bikinis, it looks way better to have the sides ride higher up on the hip and allow the front and back to dip down a little. It frames the abs and accentuates the legs, especially if they are smooth and tan. |

Re:Stand-Up Paddle boarding in a Thong - SUP (Paddleboarding) Date Posted:06/30/2019 11:53:47Copy HTML Ha, disagree about how the bikini or thong looks best. Wear it pulled flat across the belly and in back, no pulling up on the sides. Wear it as low as possible, straight across. My humble opinion.
