ABCNews.com had an article about the athletes being allowed to wear whatever they want, or makes them most comfortable. The main concerns were posting the athletes number and any corporate advertising.

I guess I am a dissenter from the rest of the group.  Sorry...but there is no way I can wear a thong when lifting.  The prospect of doing squats in one is just not appealing to me.  I will stick to wearing mine on the beach and in the pool.

I think the underwear to wear under your workout pants is very important.
On the other hand, squats and deadlift are the most important exercises in bodybuilding, so much that some bodybuilders say that they would sacrifice every other exercise (biceps, triceps, shoulders, etc) as long as they can keep doing these basic movements.
Squats when done properly, require a lot of concentration and good form.  They can take your whole body and soul out of a hard workout.
The last thing I would like when doing heavy squats, is feeling my underwear moving with every repetition.
This doesn't happen when wearing a thong.  The whole underwear stays in its place and follows the contour of my body.
Obviously it has to be a thong that fits comfortable, not too tight, and preferably of spandex or cotton/spandex material.
It's not a good idea to wear loose underwear or not underwear at all when doing squats.
I had a hernia which was operated many  years ago, and my doctor advised me after the operation to always wear tight underwear when lifting.
I'm sure  he would have advised me to wear a thong if thongs for men were out back in the late seventies.

If you think about it, wearing a thong on the beach could also contribute to the 'non appealing-ness' you mention,  because if you have to kneel or bend your knees to pick up a tennis ball, or your towel or anything, it would have almost the same effect as performing a full squat at the gym.

As I said before, if you wear the right thong when lifting, it should be so comfortable that you actually forget you are wearing anything under your workout pants or tights.
And then you just concentrate on those legs pumping blood and become bigger and bigger.

I just started a Martial arts class. As I only wear thongs, I didn't give it another thought.  My only slight concern was that my thong might be visible thru the thin uniform pants.  I suppose it may have been up close.
Any ways. My class went well. As with all the stretching, kicking, etc. I didn't have any problems with loose boxers or briefs bunching up or anything.

Does any one else practice any martials arts while thonging?

i've actually converted to thongs for sports/lifting weights/running etc.  The boxer briefs didn't support me enough that everytime i'd lift weights my profile was out there for the world to see.  It was uncomfortable.  I wore my clever sporty thong today over some gym pants for my morning run and my hour and a half in the gym and my profile was smoothed out and supported thoroughly. I didn't even know i was wearing underwear but felt supported.  Thongs are the best for excercise.

Hey ozdarkGYes i have been training in BJJ and kickboxing just on a year now and most of the guys wear a tight rash guard shirt and underwear underneath their GI or for no GI training just the rash top and tight shirts etc.... but i have a one piece that i wear under my GI or just with shorts.

It's the tight rash top and thong in one piece and zips at the back like a wetsuit. Totally perfect for the training, never have any problems and always supported when kicking and doing any moves.

As a marathon runner I have been wearing thongs for all my training runs and events upto 90km for the past 10 years. 100% better than the running shorts with inners that I used to wear which caused chaffing in certain instances with no support as the inner merely contained!. The short shorts that I wear are slit to the 1" waist band are cool and the thong gives fantastic support; getting the sizing right is very important though.

Back in 1992 - 1995 i routinely wore only a g-string while rollerbladding in the neighborhood at ft lauderdale, florida sometimes for hour at time.  It as a different time as we had the thong hot dog vendors around.  It was a different time as it seemed that thongs and g-strings were common at thie . The police would see me and do nothing.   I still have a condo in south florida but I have not rollerlbadding in about 15 years.  I will be going back in May for a few weeks in May, maybe I will do it again.  I also went to the old water park off Griffen in Ft Laurderale in the late 80's and I did wear my G-string a few times.  There was no problems as there were quite a few girls wearing them at the time.

I used to thong alot more in the mid nineties when it was far more common, string leotards in the gym under or over lycra.  It just seems so much less accepted now although i will still pull on a thong leotard if im running but only with jogging pants.  Its a shame its gotten so much less popular, some of us really do prefer the skin tight to  the baggy sweats everyone seems to work out in now, its just more feminine in my opinion.

Daystar77 - that is so true. One of the reasons why I keep wearing thong leotards even though the fashion has past is it really keeps me motivated to stay in shape. That said, teaching 4 cardio classes a day six days a week helps as well. I have also experienced a number of people in my classes say to me that wearing tight workout outfits is one of the motivations for them trying to get into better shape - that's cool. This happens much more than a student telling me that they are a intimidated by my workout attire.

I took up yoga about 2 years ago at age 51.  I tried all kinds of support wear and still had to "discretely adjust".  This week I bought my first thongs after researching the best undergarment for men who do yoga.  Wow!  No adjusting, no discomfort, and total freedom of movement.  I never thought I'd wear "butt floss" and was one of those to comment about those who did -- not anymore.  I get it now!  These things are comfortable.  I've worn them to two classes so far and in place of briefs to break them in.

NewThong,

I used to do regular yoga and you can't beat a thong under your shorts for keeping things in place.  Another option I did was a dancebelt. That's what male ballet dancers wear under their tights to keep things from flopping around... google them... kinda like a thong on steroids.

Lately I've done hot yoga where the uniform of the day for men is usually boxer-briefs shorts or a speedo-type bathing suit. I've been doing the speedo thing there but would love to go thong.  I'm afraid however it's one venue where thongs will not be accepted as outer garments.  Not even women wear them.  I hinted around to a few instructors that it seemed to me that because of the heat, (Bikram yoga is done in a room set at 105°F) and needing to check out body lines, that thongs would be ideal.  The responses ranged from "no effing way" to "that may be true, but no effing way"  Oh well maybe some day.

The more appropriate question to ask in this thread is "What activities can one do in a thong/g-string and where can one do them?"  The obvious answer would be nude beaches / resorts, and also a short list of places like the south Florida beaches, and probably some in California, etc.  If you wanted to add places where it's legal, but you're likely to be heckled, the list would become substantially longer to include places like Daytona beach.  I'm strictly speaking of thongs as outer wear here, not as something you wear under big shorts.  If you're only talking about underwear, you can wear what you want where you want, so it's not an issue of great importance.

I definitely prefer to wear a thong for running. I normally wear compression shorts or tights on my runs with a N2N or Ergowear lycra thong underneath. It provides great support and definition up front and a nice silhouette from behind. I've had a number of women comment on my definition in compression shorts thanks to a thong underneath.

I also wear spandex thongs under spandex shorts or tights, depending on how cool it is. Up here in the pacific NW, we only have a few months of thonging weather a year, so it's nice to be able to wear tight , stretchy clothing when it's cooler. The thong provides support under the spandex gear without revealing any lines. I have some Under Armour tights with white side panels that you can see my thong side strap through the material. I make sure I always wear a dark thong under those, so people can see my thong strap if they choose to look. Sometimes I'll also wear a cockring under it all for a larger protruding bulge. :-)

Yeah, yeah, add me to the thong under gym shorts crowd.  I'm big into wearing a nice muscleskins thong under my gym shorts.  Provides excellent support while still allowing plenty of "swing", which I suppose is fairly visible.  I have to admit to a slight exhibitionist thrill knowing I'm wearing a thong under my shorts at my gym which is VERY mainstream.

As a "modern girl" I wear thongs exclusively as underwear, except occationally at that time of the month.  Randy goes commando when he wears jeans, but wears thongs as underwear at other times (he usually wears thong swimwear as underwear, even in winter).  Both Mark and Randy wear thongs instead of "jock straps" for support, when support is appropriate for the recreational activity.

As far as wearing thongs as outer-wear, the times and places usuallly are limited to those where swimwear would otherwise be acceptable.  Most water sports are good for thonging.  Randy insists that swimming in a thong can increase speeds for most swimmers.  He does not personally agree with the use of the new full body, low-drag, skin tight, "fastskin" swimsuits.

He feels that they create an artificial advantage in a sport which should be about strength and technique and are a form of cheating through technology.  He believes that off-the-shelf swimwear made of these fabrics are infact dangerous for many beginner or amature athletes because they also provide muscle compression, like bike pants do, but to the whole body.  This lets the newby over exert him or herself, causing strains and other issues.  If too tight, blood flow can even be affected.  Those wearing such outfits at the Olympics and other major competitions are better trained to start with (having more muscle mass), know their limits better, and have suits which are custom made.  The average swimmer would be unable to afford the expense for a custom made full body suit like these, and even the off-the-shelf suits are too expensive for many, creating a potential advantage for more affluent swimmers in amateur events.  For these reasons, the full body, and even pants-only suits have been banned at the YMCA where he works during competitions, and discouraged at other times.

On the other hand, Speedo, Rio, and even thong suits are encouraged as the appropriate swimwear for men when taking diving classes.  When properly sized, they are less likely to come off when the diver hits the water.

Other beach activities, such as running, horse back riding, shell collecting (certainly not usually considered a competative sport), and so forth are also thong appropriate.  Randy and I love going to hot springs, and especially the natural, undeveloped ones found in the western states and provences.  The best hot springs are usually at the end of a hike, and if the weather is warm enough, we often wear just our swimwear (which of course are thongs) when taking the hike itself.

Boating is also a good place to thong of course.  We have all canoed, kyacked, and worn our thongs on various motor powered boats over the years.  Randy's newest toy, a Hobie Cat dual hulled sail boat is an especially fun boat for the calm waters at the lakes around were we live.

I have seen marathon runners, and triathalon type events where participants wore swimthongs instead of running shorts.  Last fall, I was driving through a local college town and there were was a man playing teather ball in a thong (his opponent wore shorts, but both were bare-chested.  I drove around the block and got out to get a better view, but learned that they were playing a game of "strip teather ball", and that the thonger was one garment away from loosing.  I had hoped that a new college look was getting started.

hiking,

any federal lands are great for hiking in shorts or thong. It always surprises me how little use so much of these parks get.
As the land is Federal there are no State laws to deal with.  If I meet someone on the trail I may pull on something but sometimes not, depending on the day/situation, kids, etc.   Usually if I am really obviously working, running I just run by the sometimes a whistle, sometimes a giggle but never anythng worse.   wildlife refuges, are very often unattended unused.  I have walked/run miles and not seen anyone.   both in AZ and mid west.

I used to wear a thong over Lycra shorts for aerobics and step classes in the 90s and early 2000s. I am a heterosexual male, but I think most of the other class members assumed I was gay. I just find that it is more comfortable to wear tight fitting clothes, and only wearing Lycra shorts does not give enough support. I also found it made the classes more fun for me. The ladies were wearing thongs, so nobody could complain about my attire. However, nowadays nobody wears a thong for aerobics anymore - not even the 40s plus women. After getting some strange looks at being the only person in the class dressed that way, I regrettably stopped. Now I wear loose fitting shorts and T-shirt which is far less comfortable and leads to chafing - not to mention being really boring. Does anyone, male or female, share my love of wearing a thong to exercise classes, in particular anyone in Sydney? Maybe we need to try rekindle the 90s fashion?

In general, the only reason I've ever gone to the gym has been for weight training, and sometimes a bit of cardio on the machines.  In the old days, I used to catch an occasional glance at the ladies in the aerobics training classes.  They had somewhat interesting attire back in those days, mostly tight spandex bike shorts and sports bras, but now almost any gym you go to workout in the USA, I can assure you that you will not be distracted by the ladies.

I have just recently started to wear thong underwear under my workout shorts to the gym.  I cannot do it on squat or deadlift days, but have no issue on upperbody workout days. I have never seen another guy with a thong (either under his clothes, or in the locker room).  As for women on the other hand, that is a different story.  I usually workout with my wife in the morning..there are tons of moms there (they come right to the gym after they do the school drop-offs).  They all wear spandex shorts/capris/leggings.  THong lines are ubiquitous.  Last week there was a group of 8 of them sitting on a mat stretching.  I noted 6 very visable thong lines (and could not makout anything on the other two).  My guess is they were commmando (that is what my wife does).  According to my wife ...commando under spandex is fairly common.  THongs are next and she tells me that hardly anybody (except for much older ladies) wears full back underwear to the gym.

I actually miss the thong leotards over spandex/exercise shorts at aerobics classes.

some exercise pants dont allow for a thong line to show, until the lady gets really sweaty and the triangle in the back absorbs her sweat, making a triangular wet spot on the back of her exercise pants.

just another observation. Also, some women dont even wear a thong under their exercise pants or shorts and during their class, their pants crawl up their crack, or even create camel toes in the front.

God I love it so! hehe!

Stanpuppy: I don't get why you can't wear thong for squats, deadlifts? Isn't it even more important wearing thong then other times? I wear my thong  everytime doing exercises almost like habit. As for seeing women in heather grey cotton tights wearing a wet thong underneath I've seen that and love it to. Women who did that in the past used to wear thong leotards then moves to tights with g-string very hot seeing her getting wet and the entire outline on her light colored tights. It was if she wore a thong over her tights with a distinct dark sweat line front to back. Now she wears trendy dark navy or black bootcut pants every women wears these days.
As for seeing thongs under female pants at the gym many hate thongs because the get out of place and uncomfortable. Many I see wearing under there pants is hipster panty or grandma briefs. But mostly I see is boyshorts hard to tell if they are wearing loose pants. Only when they sway there hips out tightening the pant leg up I see the lines on there lower hips.
Only seen one women going commando she was wearing fiited Capri pants usually see her in distinct grandma panty line. This time I noticed no VPL and as checked out her front side I noticed her camel toe prominently on display. Only sat there looking at it as she wasn't aware while having a conversation with someone. Now that is very sexy then all the thong and gusset padding under womens exercise pants.

I agree with stanpuppy. I would try to avoid wearing a thong to the gym on a leg day due to squats and deadlifts. Perhaps it is a physiological thing about how thongs sit on your hips/waist in relation to the thong strap. I know generally whenever I bend over or squat in a thong the back part does tend to tighten a fair bit. so if its a tighter fitting thong then trying to squat a 150kg bar would at very least put me off, if not become quite uncomfortable.

I'm generally of a mindset where I like wearing all types of underwear though. not an advocate purely for thongs.

Re:Thongs for sports and exercise activities

I would say it could be more psychological than physiological....last Monday did 20 full reps with a bit more than one a half times my body weight (145 kg) and didn't even feel that I was wearing anything.
What I do find really annoying and painful is doing squats without the padded wrap around the bar.  It really hurts on my shoulders and upper back and you end up concentrating more on the pain there than on your quads.

When doing squats I don't even like padded bars.  I bought a Manta Ray, fits around the bar and over the shoulders, hard plastic, don't know if they are available in your area though.  Countours perfectly to the shape of your shoulders.

Re:Thongs for sports and exercise activities

For a lot of people, I think it may be psychological. The thought of something cutting into your backside while under a lot of weight could be intimidating. But personally, I find it's definitely physical. If my legs are together I notice it pushes stuff forward and out quite a bit as I squat (I think I have fairly large adductors and tend to store a decent amount of fat around there too) therefore pulling the back strap a bit. So unless the thongs decently lose in the waist band and can basically slip down a little to compensate for this, it tends to increase the tension on the back strap. It doesn't happen very much, the amount of tension is pretty minimal, but it's definitely there. I think I would have to solely wear thongs to learn to ignore it. Everyone's different I guess.

my gym hasn't bought new shoulder pads for a very long time. so the ones they do have are well used and a bit flat. the worst part though is the covering on the outside of them is so well worn it's become cracked, brittle and a little sharp. So instead I've gotten used to folding over a beach towel a couple of times for padding. It seems to do the trick and doesn't really slip under heavy weight either.

Otherwise a front squat with either crossed arms or weightlifting style can be a little less sore. It gets sore on your shoulders or wrists respectively though.

I have always worn thongs for doing activities, usually under shorts if not a water activity. For cycling I used to wear a thong body with short black cycle style tights. No padding and very light weight. I don't cycle these days so that's that. For running I wear a thong under very high cut running shorts that float in the wind and show an awful lot of leg! When scuba diving on holiday I always wear a thong under my wetsuit. It's so comfortable and practical. I do get some looks from other divers. For all swimming and water activities it's a maximum of a thong or a string or less!..Discovering this board only a few days ago has rekindled my enthusiasm. So yesterday when I went running  I decided to be a bit daring. I run from home to the beach front (sea wall) and then about 4 miles along there before returning along the streets. The sea wall is often very busy with cyclists and walkers though it's a route that isn't visible from the road. I decide to wear my yellow Joe Snyder Mini Cheek suit under my running shorts and take the shorts off once I reached the sea.I reached the slope up to the wall and stripped off to the tiny suit (a thong really) and carried the shorts. I had a white and blue fitted lycra t shirt on which looked quite good with the suit. I set off on the 4 mile straight route feeling very cheeky! Surprisingly it was very quiet for a Sunday evening. There were a couple of dog walkers and cyclists who never seemed to notice. Perhaps they had a second look once I'd passed! Before joining the main road at the end I put the shorts back on.
I enjoyed the run so plan to wear my JS camo print rio thong next time and see how it goes. My wife wouldn't be pleased at me going running in just a thong in our home area so I need to start from home with shorts. .One solution would be to strip off the shorts after leaving the house and leave them behind a garden wall or something. It's a long run to the sea front so I'd be extremely daring to do that on a public road anyway. But you never know!
