Date Posted:02/29/2008 06:36:43Copy HTML Over the past year or so I have been debating how much of a bulge is okay. I personally like to wear my t-backs a bit on the small side to help accent my assets. Most of my suits are very clingy and show the outline of my goods. On several recent trips to the beach I noticed most guys not showing much of any bulge. I know my wife enjoys the look of my bulge and likes to point out others that have a similar view. I am curious on the views and opinions of others (men and women) in regards to the 'bulge'.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:02/29/2008 09:11:25Copy HTML If your wife likes it, go for it! (depending on where you are, of course). I bet "most guys" are in dork shorts which tells you everything about following the "trend".

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/01/2008 01:36:52Copy HTML I look at it the same way as if it were a woman trying to hide her breasts in a bathing suit...you really can't. On the other hand, most women are shy about having a visible nipple bump or a camel toe because that's showing a bit too much detail. So, bulge...I don't try to hide it, but if I'm at a water park or regular beach I draw the line at being able to see if I'm circumcised or not, etc. There are unlined suits I'll wear in our own pool that are comfortable and don't leave much to the imagination, but I don't wear those just anywhere.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/01/2008 03:57:22Copy HTML I guess this is a topic in which each person, including the general public, would have their own opinion. I personally see no problem with a bulge that indicaes a fair amound of equipment inside but isn't specific about the details, and I see no problem with wearing such styles just about anywhere. When it starts to get detailed about outlining what is inside or having an outward projection of the member, I think I need to be more careful about the crowd I'll be in. tman001, if your wife likes it, then go with what she likes where she likes it. I wish mine felt that way.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/01/2008 05:43:44Copy HTML Personally I think showing a nice bulge among other adults should be fine but with that said one should remember that some areas have laws about “displaying genitals in an excited state-----” which although rarely enforced can be applied to not only thongs but to speedos as well as lycra running shorts or anything that clings or enhances the package. So just use caution as to where you show off to much since the control freaks will use anything they can in their quest to make sure anything less than board shorts will soon be illegal.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/02/2008 01:56:41Copy HTML The suits I own are nylon or lycra so they show a lot wet or dry. The amount they show depends, the lighter color suits show more when wet, the old neon yellow joe snyder suit is a good example.
When wet you can see thru around 60 percent so I watch where I get it wet or take care when I exit the pool, don't want a bunch of kids around at that point. When in the water I don't care how much you can see thru any suit as waves and ripples in the water dont really give that good of a view. At the ocean I watch when I come out of the ocean to see who is walking down the beach that I will run into when exiting. If they are older than 21 I could care less if they get an eyeful. At the ocean I usually wear a gstring or at most a thong but around the pool it is usually a thong. I only have about 4 suits that have back coverage and seldom wear them. |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/03/2008 10:00:23Copy HTML If you don't want the detail, wear a lined suit. But I think bulge is OK, as long as it's just your package 'as is', and there is no excitement showing or extras hanging out!

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/03/2008 12:27:49Copy HTML I'll second Nadathing and Thongmad, bulge is fine, part of being a male, but under normal circumstances best not to overdo things. My printed mesh, tan-thru sliding g-strings work fine, since even though the fabric is thin, the pattern obscures anatomical detail, there's no outward thrusting, and the coverage is decent -- just the natural shape of things, the same as with my speedos. I've never understood the desire to minimize things, as some folks apparently like to do. As to maximizing size and projection, minimizing coverage, showing detail, going see-thru, etc. -- those are more understandable, yet best reserved for special environments where others may appreciate the display. So yes, Tman001, with your wife, go for it! With the rest of us, judge the crowd and dress accordingly.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/04/2008 01:30:16Copy HTML I have just bought a Skinz suit with their new PRO pouch lining. It bulges way out and is definitely not see-through. It has a projecting contour combined with a new thick lining material. It is now a part of my collection of unusual suits, and I haven't decided where to wear it.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/11/2008 12:23:45Copy HTML NativeNude raises a good point about the law and the "excited" state. The suit does not have to be see through, or projecting, or have very thin fabric providing a "painted on" effect for it to be obvious that one is "excited." This can be a problem with any spandex suit if they are looking to make this an issue.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/11/2008 10:45:43Copy HTML The legal term most of these goofy laws use is "discernably turgid", which means "distended beyond the natural state; swollen; inflated". This would seem hard to measure accurately since guys natural state might resemble another guys swollen semi.
I have a few pairs of aussiebum "wonder jock" lycra speedos that I like to wear to water parks because they provide extra support and I don't have to keep adjusting things. They do show a pretty good bulge but nothing rude and I get lots of complements and don't hesitate to wear them in family situations. Discernably turgid? Probably, if you had all sorts of complex measuring equipment and the water isn't too cold! |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/11/2008 04:53:02Copy HTML The problem with the “turgid” laws are they are really up to the officer responding to a complaint. Which means if they just want to make trouble it’s one of many such vague laws to do it with. At the turn of the century when pants where tight the law was used a fair bit which brought wide use of dressing rings ( prince alberts) along with cloth bindings and such to hide any outlines or bulges. The good thing is it’s rarely used anymore but in these new times of the control freaks using anything they can to reduce every ones freedoms, such a law can be used to bring a person into court where it will most likely be dismissed, only to be replaced with a sexual predator charge. Just something to keep in mind in these changing times.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/21/2008 01:41:42Copy HTML Last season I bought a skinz bikini, M26 if I recall correctly. Unlined lycra. It fits snug and where it drapes it's like spraypaint. I wore this without incident in the caribbean last fall and intend to wear it in Mexico this May. My feeling is that you've got the same stuff every other guy has and what the hell. If someone is ashamed - let 'em wear their dork shorts.
I'd prefer to be nude, but that's another issue. Pete |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/31/2008 08:14:26Copy HTML I think you shouldn't bother to "hide" a bulge if you've got it, but honestly. The suits where it bends and contorts your junk to make it look huge just makes you look like you have an XXX. and nobody want's to see that in spite of how 'spectacular' you yourself might think your bulge looks. i think people are a lot less likely to be offended by a thong, especially with kids around, if you don't make a scene about your package.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:04/04/2008 10:03:11Copy HTML I'll have to agree with the last poster. I wouldn't take any steps to make a bulge look bigger, but I sure wouldn't hide it either.
I do think about the tuck when there are others around, and there's the line between bulge and aroused that you have to be careful of too! |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/07/2009 04:42:13Copy HTML I agree with the last two posters. Alot of times it depends on the situation as well. I am ok with a muscleskins MPX thong on south beach, I am not on the nj shore. Its just a function of the vibe in each of those places

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/09/2009 01:30:35Copy HTML I don’t see any problem showing some bulge as long as it is bulge & not see through. I have a pair of bike shorts (spandex White) that has a decent pouch & I wear it while exercising & walking. I do wear a t-shirt that just covers the bulge but if you take a good close look you can see bulge. I do wear a thong under the shorts so all the details of the bulge isn’t on display; you see just a bulge if you look long & close enough. If adults want to look they will! At the beach I do try & lay out away from the other beach goers so showing bulge is no problem, if other adults walks by & its not a family or kids I usually don’t worry about covering up. If it’s a family with children or kids I’ll cover up with a towel or cover up shorts. I do wear unlined thongs so going in & out of the water I watch who is around. The first time I thonged at the beach was in a orange MPX & a older women stopped by to chat & comment on how good my suit looked, I was worried that the suit was too revealing since you could see detail clearly but figured she came up to me & started to chat she couldn’t be offended & she wasn’t. To & from the car I do wear regular shorts to cover up.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/09/2009 11:29:33Copy HTML Personally I would never wear anything like a MPX or a Koala suit in public. I'm more conservative and stick to Dore Low Cut's and Muscleskins MP's.
I've bought in the past some suits in quite bright colours like tangerine, yellow and bright green. I'm thinking of not buying bright colours once these suits go in 'retirement'. Bulging is ok as long as is not exagerated, and unfortunately these suits call too much attention at the 'bulge' site because of their bright colours. I feel more comfortable about the 'bulging' factor when thonging darker solid colours like black, brown, red, emerald, blue, etc. For me the thong is the icing on the cake; I'm more concerned on showing a proportionate body, with little fat and some muscle definition. Wearing a thong is the treat for having a body at its potential. The bulge is only one more feature of the whole package (the body). John Howard |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/10/2009 03:43:46Copy HTML I personally have no other choice than to bulge when wearing any of my suits because they are all G-string sliders and they are naturally going to bulge. I personally do not like the wide flat front of most of the conservative thongs, I think it looks like a woman's conservative thong.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/10/2009 04:26:54Copy HTML I like to show a slight bulge in my thong or bikini but a natural one vs. an exaggerated, in your face one, lol. While I have always hated the old style flat front speedos that squash my package, I like a suit that cups it and shows a slight teasing bulge for those that want to see it. Sometimes, a XXX ring helps without overdoing it.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/21/2009 08:52:12Copy HTML It seems like the overall trend in mens garments is to allow some accommodation for "the bulge". I agree that the old school flat front speedos and other types of briefs and underwear basically did not acknowledge the existance of the bulge. Everything was squished and flattened out, which was not good either from a asthetics or comfort standpoint.
I think any suit that allows for the natural contour of the male anterior would not be considered inappropriate in even the most conservative beach settings. I will use the muscleskins MP and Tulio swimsuits as an example. I have worn a muscleskins MP bikini on the public beach in atlantic city and have had no problems whatsoever with it. I have worn a tulio pouch bikini in hotel swimming pools with reactions ranging from neutral (i.e none) to positive (you look great in that suit). I think where you start to get in trouble is when you run into suits that purposely thrust the bulge in your face and make it the focal point of the suit. ALot of koala, vizeau, and dore stuff fits in this category. I would say the Muscleskins MPX teeters right on the edge. I was trying on suits last night in preparation for an upcoming trip to south beach. All my MP were fine, but just on a whim i pulled on my MPX's. The black one actually would probably fly, and i would not have a problem with it (....on south beach, probably would not work on the jersey shore). However, i also have a white one and i was like....NO WAY!!. You could see every vein and ripple. Something as simple as the color made the same suit look acceptable on one hand, and completely inappropriate on the other. I think women expect a bulge in men, it just seems like we are trying too hard, and drawing unnecessary attention to ourselves when we put it on display in a suit that screams ...Hey world, Look at my C***!!!! |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/22/2009 01:51:02Copy HTML You got it, Stanpuppy. I like a suit, be it speedo, thong or g, that makes it plain I'm a male, but says so matter of factly. They're usually front seamed, like my 1" slim front HE Swimwear thongs, though my lap suit, a 1" Arena bikini, is seamless and contours the package beautifully. Even my tan-thru sliding g-string, seamed, is very calm in the pouch, its main feature that makes it very decent. That plus its size, covering my unshaven pubes, making it nicely proportional to my overall body size (it's what I'm wearing in my Images shot). I used to go to extremes for some reason, but as I've grown more confident thonging/stringing, I just want to feel totally comfortable around regular folks, and the decently pouched suits I choose make that possible. I wish not to be offensive, I wish to be accepted. And I am. It feels good.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/22/2009 01:28:01Copy HTML rockys01 wrote "The first time I thonged at the beach was in a orange MPX & a older women stopped by to chat & comment on how good my suit looked..." I started a thread about how much older women appreciate a fit man (of any age) in a small suit and how willing they are to make positive comments. Obviously, if they like any small suit, they would like one that has a pronounced bulge. Of course, finding a venue where the audience is predominately over 40 women is a local I'm still hoping someday to find. |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:01/23/2009 08:03:55Copy HTML I just placed an order with muscleskins. 3 MP thongs (white, cobalt, and tangerine). I also placed a custom order for an MPX in a new color they have called SOLAR (basically yellow). This fabric will be super sheer when wet. I figure the 3 MP's will be for the spring trip to south beach, as well as for other public beaches up here in the northeast. I will bust out the MPX when we head to the nude beach at Sandy Hook in early summer.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/15/2009 04:38:32Copy HTML I just got 2 MP thongs from Muscleskins, gunmetal & cobalt, with narrow, -1cm fronts. They'll work fine when we get to a couple of beaches in Hawaii. Also taking some low, narrow front push-up thongs I got last summer from Dore'. Some of Dore's other styles, like the Missle, are a bit too much for my taste.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:03/16/2009 06:20:50Copy HTML Hi stanpuppy....the narrow front MP's fit really well. Very similar to some of Dore's narrow thongs. They're not excessively narrow, just enough to be comfortable without binding. I took a chance with the -1cm pouch and it worked out OK. I definitely wouldn't go any smaller though.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/04/2009 05:26:14Copy HTML Is there anyone else that does not have this issue to worry about? I was not gifted with a large endowment. I'm what you would call a "grower not a shower". I only bulge when excited. The rest of the time things stay mostly put a way. I am not embarassed by this, any more. I do not worry about it when I am thonging infront of other people. Is anyone else built this way? Do you try to do anything about it?
I had one female friend "notice", while we were swimming, and asked me about it. i told her, "no the water wasnt cold, thats just the way things normally are". She did not laugh or anything, just took it at face value and moved on to the next subject. And never brought it up after. |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/06/2009 09:39:30Copy HTML We often hear women complain of "body shame" that is imposed on them. Well,
I think The Bulge issue is men's version of body shame. Hence the wide use of Dork Shorts. I'm watching mens pro beach volleyball on TV. These guys are wearing baggy board shorts down to their knees and baggy tank tops that come down over their butts. Of course they're dripping with sweat. Just from a practical aspect how much more cooler they would be (temperature-wise) by wearing bikinis. Plus, I think everyone on this board would agree they would be cooler fashion- wise too. :-) These guys are the fittest of the fit and they're covered up like some 1900 "swimming costume". Contrast this with womens pro beach volleyball attire and, well, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to seel the difference. As a matter of fact, I think I read somewhere (maybe this board) that womens pro beach volleyball regulations limit the size of their bottoms. I think it was 2 to 3 inches maximum at the side. The difference is ridiculous. Anyway, I agree somewhat with the previous posters. Basically, there is a time a place for everything. I think that men should not be ashamed of their anatomy and that, in general, a smooth, unexagerated bulge should be accepted anywhere athletic wear is acceptable. i.e. bikinis at the beach, bike shorts when biking or exercising, maybe even lycra shorts when going to the grocery store, etcetara. However, when at places like the beach where one expects to see more body exposure I think the boundaries should be much wider. Smaller swimsuits with narrower fronts are naturally going to show more bulge, and I don't think there is a thing wrong with that. I like to sunbathe in a low-cut g-string where I have to point to 6 o'clock, so I project a little at a very natural angle and, because my suits are not real tight, have a little natural jiggle when I walk. My opinion is a bit torn on the issue of mens suits that exagerate a mans bulge like push-out suits or torpedo suits. On one hand it seems a bit "out there" (pardon the pun) and a bit over the top. On the other hand, if a woman can wear a push-up top that exagerates hear breasts or swimsuit bottoms with center seams that clearly define her genital lips, then why can't a men have parity? Men's body acceptance took a big step back in the 90s and a comeback is long overdue. Men, don't be ashamed of your bodies! Max |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/07/2009 01:31:29Copy HTML well said, maxesposure...
Men are scared to look sexual because the fear of looking 'gay'. Few men are confident enough to be different, usually mid age men who can't be bother by what other people might thing of them. Beach volleyball is the perfect example of how men are supossed to believe that their bodies can not be 'sexual'. I would add another variable: if men wore speedos or similar swimwear while playing beach volleyball, they would somehow 'steal' the show from the girls. Now, the girls catch all the attention. They keep trimming their swimwear more and more to make it more revealing and sexual. Men on the other hand, fall naively on this trap and follow instructions of what women want: men should only wear ugly dork shorts. Ironically, sometimes the most criticism to men wearing revealing swimwear, come from women with great bodies who wear very revealing swimwear. This did actually happen to me. They don't like competition. And other women make fun of men wearing thongs. When as far as history tells, thongs were first worn by men, not women, and for practical reasons. Women stole thongs from men to make them their own. And not just for practical reasons, also to look more sexual. John Howard |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/10/2009 01:15:53Copy HTML This doesn't really apply to "bulge or not to bulge" but it was an observation that I made this last weekend. I was at the local pool and while I was getting some sun I took extra attention to what other's were wearing. Of course, every other man there was wearing "boardshorts" while I was wearing a small bikini. Well, when I finally started really looking at what they were wearing, I noticed that almost all of them wore underwear under their swimsuits as well. Now, when I was a kid, this would have gotten you laughed out of the pool. These guys are not only wearing knee-length shorts but underneath they have another pair of baggy boxers. Some it looked like were wearing the standard issue "tighty-whities". I'm sorry, but wearing a pair of underwear under your swimtrunks has got to be one of the most uncomfortable and rediculous things I've seen yet. Geez....how does it feel to be wearing a pair of damp drawers all day...cotton doesn't dry out very fast. Sorry, but that's just plain stupid.
But of course, I'm the "weird one" because I'm wearing a bikini.....uh....yeah. |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/11/2009 12:44:18Copy HTML Please excuse another off-topic reply, but I also have noticed that close to 100% of the guys at my gym who wear very long, baggy and LINED gym shorts have the waist band of baggy boxers showing above the shorts. Wearing underwear with unlined shorts is understandable, but I just don't get it with shorts having a liner. Seems kind of like wearing both a belt and suspenders with your pants. Oh well, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!

Apart from their discomfort, the hygiene implications need to be considered. In some countries in Europe they insist that you shower naked before entering the pool and in France shorts are often not allowed for hygiene reasons. The selfishness of many people never ceases to amaze me! |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/11/2009 04:32:14Copy HTML I generally like some support when doing things athletic. Could be spandex over a jock, a thong or bikini under loose shorts/boardies, or a thong/string alone. The exception is skinny dipping or the rare buff run, where freedom trumps support.
Regular underwear sounds reasonable if it's something like briefs under shorts, but for swimming? Or worse yet, boxers under boardies? Matchingthongs is right, the discomfort and hygiene issues would seem to dictate otherwise. It must be the power of fashionable, logo'd waistbands that drive these characters to the absurd. I doubt it's bulge avoidance, though, since boardies worn right -- low on the waist and snug around the hips -- show some bulge, as well as flat stomachs and well-sculpted lower backs, including a bit of cleavage. It's so masculine, too bad to cover it all with silly waistbands. |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/11/2009 05:56:48Copy HTML Yes, I doubt this is done to avoid any "bulge" issues. It was just an observation I made and honestly, I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. The next time any of you are at the pool/beach/body of water...just check out what everybody else is wearing...you know...the "normal/straight/macho" guys in the boardshorts. I guarantee you that most will also have boxer shorts under them.
But, hey...I'm the "gay guy" in the bikini. I'm not "cool" like that. |

I found when I went for walks I would get a rash right on the tip, if you know what I mean. It hurt for days. I now where a thong swimsuit underneath. So I can see why they are wearing something underneath but a pair of boxers is uncomfortable even when they are not wet.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/12/2009 11:49:00Copy HTML I thought swim jocks were intended to be worn under speedo-type suits to control the bulge, i.e., make it smooth rather than show detail. Unlike boardies, regular trunks always had mesh liners, so unless you wanted some support or wanted to camoflage anatomic detail when wet, they weren't needed, at least not for handling rash.
On that last point I can sympathize with Thongjockey. Last December on St. Bart's, wearing only no-liner white board shorts as a coverup to and from the c/o beaches, I once lost my car keys and had to walk 2-3 miles back to the rental agency for a spare, then retrace my steps. Those white boardies soon developed red stains in sensitive places, and each step became agony. Rule: always carry a thong for emergencies. A HOM Plume would have been perfect. And for the "normal/straight/macho" guys, a perfect time to don a speedo (but better be low-cut so no one finds out). |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/12/2009 02:49:09Copy HTML jocks under speedos? i've never heard that. in the 70's we had PE every day, and wore jocks under gym shorts, and swim trunks did not have liners yet either. swim jocks for swim shorts; reg jocks for gym shorts.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/12/2009 06:05:11Copy HTML Here in Ohio, I have seen more than one young man in board shorts over boxers, over tighty whities. Talk about over kill! Barb and Dawn, the girls from next door who are the youngest I talk to regularly tell me that boxers are such an important part of being accepted by other men today that if a guy prefers to wear jockey briefs, they feel they have to wear boxers over their briefs to keep in style and to be showing the right type waist band sticking out the top of their jeans. Mom showed me some pictures from the 70's when boxers were something lot of the "old" men wore. Boxers were also popular with guys in the more rural areas. Briefs were the norm on guys then. What her pictures showed were guys wearing skimpy cut-offs over their boxers. The boxers stuck out the top AND bottom of the shorts.
Styles change -- Usually for the worst! Traci |

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/12/2009 08:21:36Copy HTML has anyone here ever worn shorts over their thong with the waist of the thong showing? On the rare occasions when I feel like I should wear loose shorts to a beach, pool, etc. I like to wear some that sit low on my hips with a thong underneath. I like for just enough of the waist to show on the hips to let people know what I'd rather be wearing. I don't like the "whale tail" look in back though, so I try to just let the side straps ride up over the shorts.

Re:To Bulge or Not to Bulge Date Posted:06/12/2009 08:41:50Copy HTML Board shorts, boxers, AND tightey whities?!?!?!?!?!? What is wrong with people? Though I believe in freedom to wear what you want to feel comfortable in to go swimming, that is really overkill! I don't wear that much even when I'm walking on the streets in public. Just exactly how do people swim with all that clothes on?I too remember when boxers were what 'old' guys wore. I guess I'll never be 'old' ;-)
