Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:05/11/2023 04:46:14Copy HTML Yes, very true. I forgot to comment on that inconsistency!
And as you say, testing the waters with something brief would be the way to go if need be. But it would be pushing the boundaries before they deem it 'not family appropriate'. It's not near me, so I don't feel inclined. Conversely my more local venue has this as their written swimwear policy: https://www.everyoneactive.com/legal-policies/swimwear-policy/
I have referred to this elsewhere on this forum. What they are steering towards is encouraging those who wish to cover up more. Which is fair enough. As for everything else, so long as it is chlorine friendly and does not have anything printed on that would cause offence, should be accepted. The only grey area is what is deemed 'appropriate'. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:07/06/2023 11:42:56Copy HTML Well I am pleased to report on the Aspire Leisure Centre in Stanmore. A couple of weeks ago I had arrived at the Bushey Grove Leisure Centre planning on taking advantage of their Friday evening adults only session. I have successfully thonged there a few times before without incident. Unfortunately I was informed by the front desk that the pool was out of action due to a leak.
Considering this was the same reason that scuppered my visit to the Parliament Hill lido (I have yet to return) a few weeks ago, I wondered if fate was conspiring against me. No matter, I dived into my Hussle app to look up an alternative for that evening.
The nearest was the Aspire Leisure Centre. It's round the back of the Stanmore hospital, and is run by a charity whose main purpose is the rehabilitation of spinal patients. Consequently it includes an inclined access enabling wheelchair access into the pool. Guarding this slope are railings the length of the poolside by the access from the changing area.
What this means is that it prevents you from entering the pool directly from the changing rooms. You have to walk along to either end.
The first time I went, I opted for my dark blue muscleskins with a bare seat. So skimpy, but my most conservative non-dork shorts. This was while I got the lay of the land.
On this and my subsequent visits, I noted that the clientelle consisted largely of unfit females (I have restrained from using a derogatory adjective here) in large functional one piece suits, and males in conservative shorts. Naturally this was a bit of a disappointment as it's preferrable when some females at least set the precedent. Due to the catchment area, a significant proportion were Asian, which further led me to question the suitability of this as a thonging venue.
The second time I went, I wore my royal blue muscleskins with a cheeky seat. While doing my lengths again, I 'accidentally' allowed the suit to ride up into a thong. It would do, but not the same experience as wearing a true thong. On my exit, I made a point not to notice my suit riding up as I walked in front of the lg. As far as I could tell, he really didn't seem to care.
For my third swim, I took the plunge (pun not intended!) and went for my turquoise muscleskins with a whale seat. Getting to the pool, I had my towel wrapped around my waist for as long as possible, before dropping it on a bench. Once again, absolutely no-one - neither the swimmers in the pool nor the lg - seemed to bat an eyelid. At one stage I exchanged a few words with one swimmer as she rested at the end of the lane. If she was aware, she was not fazed. I just about managed to do my 50 lengths in the timeslot. For my last one, the lgs had already started clearing up, I had to swim around the lane ropes that were being brought in. This did mean however that when I got out, it was right in front of all three pool staff. One of whom was the duty manager. Once again as I walked out of the pool, it was in front of the same lg as last week.
Having used the poolside showers and gotten changed, as I left I went right past the manager, again. If she had deemed it necessary to say something about my swimwear being inappropriate for any future visit, this would have been an ideal opportunity. Instead she gave me a pleasant goodbye.
There is no mention of swimwear policy anywhere on their site. Let's see if their quiet thong tolerance continues unabated. It appears that the main focus for each visistor is on doing their own thing. The other advantage of using a Hussle day pass is that they have yet to process the code. So I may be looking at a fourth visit for the price of one. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:07/27/2023 08:07:18Copy HTML Monday evening I went to the Novotel in Reading on the recommendation of another member. I had been previously with the intention of wearing a thong, but ended up in a Manstore Cheeky as there were a few children about.
As you head into the leisure area there is a window into the pool and I could only see one couple using the facilities. So, I decided to go for it. I changed into a men's plain black Collusion thong from Asos, as I deliberately wanted something non-descript. So that it is just seen as 'normal' and not an attempt to draw excessive attention and potentially make others feel uncomfortable.
From the changing room I half covered with a towel, just as a slight safety net in case there were others (children) I couldn't see initially. However, there were not so I spent the next hour going between the steam room, sauna and pool, in just a thong. The couple paid no attention at all, neither did a slightly older woman who entered the facilities later.
So all in all a good trip and would recommend the venue if anyone is in the area, especially as they offer a day pass. Definitely looking to go back soon. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:05/22/2024 09:33:31Copy HTML I emailed Pells Pool in Lewes this week, specifically asking if thongs were permitted, and was told that they preferred standard family friendly swimming attire. I have a couple of tangas for where I can't wear a thong or g-string. I'll try one of those. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:05/23/2024 10:04:19Copy HTML thong1 : in my opinion that was a mistake. All you have achieved is drawing unnecessary attention to swimwear styles.
I would have just quietly got on with my lap swimming & acted normally - which is what I have done four times this week so far. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:08/02/2024 02:04:30Copy HTML I went to Oasis pool in Tottenham Court Road today. I regularly thong on the sun deck and wear some small SKU trunks over when I swim. Today a guy came into the fast lane in a small blue thong and did a swim for about half an hour. It was a fairly adult crowd but looked brave nonetheless. Nobody bothered him so I feel I should have shown some support but maybe next time!
There was also a guy in a thong on the sun deck who had a bit of a stroll around so was good to see the trend is catching on!
Usual 3-4 women in rios/thongs as well. Certainly helps when sun is shining! |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:08/28/2025 10:49:18Copy HTML At my local lap pool this morning I had occasion to get out mid session. While 'ashore' I had chats with the pool manager & several of the regular crowd. All quite normal & what I was wearing - J Snyder Capri - just wasn't an issue. Confirms yet again that behaving normally & fitting in with what's happening is what matters, not what you are wearing. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:02/03/2026 12:57:49Copy HTML Not so much a swimming pool experience but more health club. I was at a David Lloyd club in Edinburgh at the gym. After my CrossFit style workout I went for a swim and then returned to the locker room which is fairly open plan. It was a Thursday and pretty late so the place was pretty quiet. Normally when changing into a thong I use the privacy booth but this time As I towelled dry and the locker room was empty and decided to be brave for the first time and lay my towel flat and pull out my black tanga style ck one thong. As I did my heart was racing but it was too late to change my mind. I stepped into it and as I pulled it up I heard the locker room door go behind me. It was a young guy maybe in his early 20s and he was using the locker beside me. So from having never shown my body in a thong in David Lloyd before to be standing right beside a guy awkwardly squeeezing past me to get to his locker whilst only wearing my thong was pretty embarrassing. Anyway I had nowhere to hide and just decided to embrace it. I pulled my thong slightly above my hips adjusted the pouch and the sat on the centre bench to put my socks, deodorant and chain on while this guy changed beside me. I then walked a few feet to the mirror to moisturise and the slid on my trousers and rest of my clothes and carried on with my night.
I haven’t yet been back to that health club but wonder when the reaction would be if I bumped into the same guy. |

Re:UK swimming pools Date Posted:02/03/2026 02:21:34Copy HTML Hi gsj, I guess you’re right. With having never seen any guys in thongs at the gym I guess I’m just overthinking it. Still not sure I’m brave enough to change in public again at DL but time will tell. |
