While many on this board say "don't ask first" you might in a busy spot where you have to make reservations in advance to insure you get a room. I have emailed Hilton (using a name that doesn't associate the name with me) and spedifically ask if thongs were permitted. Only once was I told "NO" and this was in Utah. Everywhere else they returned to me with a "we want you to enjoy your stay, so if you want to wear a thong, that would be okay with us." From what I was told, the main Hilton reservation or question place contacts the specific hotel you are asking about, so their answer is current and what is the rule at the hotel you are asking about. Another way you might get a hint at thong usage at a specific place is to go to Google and ask for hotel reviews for the place you want to go. I have done this and some of the review places let you serarch by a word like "thong". Others you need to read many reviews and probably not find one mentioning thongs. Some are outright "someone had on a thong and the manager told them they had to wear more." Others were like "We were surprise when we wore our thongs at the pool and at one point the manager came around, but didn't have any issumes about our swimwear." The best report is a more current one of course (the rules could change) and those that say "we complained about someone wearing a thong at the pool but the managment did noting to stop them."

I went to ocean front recently and I was amazed how many girls in cheeky and thong bikinis. Only a couple of guys in thong. I would go to ocean view to be safer.

I will be staying in Chesapeake, Greenbrier West for a work trip this month and September. The hotel I booked has a nice outdoor pool. I called the hotel and the pool is open and they told me wearing thongs at the pool is okay.

Senior cop at Ft. Story advised us that VA Beach has stopped enforcing thong law because so many styles show so much ass that they can't keep up. Feds don't enforce it on military base either. Topless is still out, but thongs may be gaining ground.

Good to hear. Now someone should propose the law be amended to conform with common practice and the current community norms.

Any recent reports? I'm assuming it's not the greatest idea to set up in a thong on the beach at Virginia Beach given the legal status.

You might check out First Landing State Park. I say a lot of girls in cheeky bottoms if not true thongs. It’s hard to know when cheeky becomes thong!  The No fashion police “ website lists thongs in Va state parks as legal.  Also Sandbridge south of the main crowded area of Va Beach has girls with thongs. Then there is the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge just south of that. 
I have asked lifeguards at Buckroe Beach in Hampton and at least a couple years ago they said things were ok there. With all the girls wearing very cheeky suits/ thongs now all over I suspect it’s still ok! 

Seeing more and more thongs at Ft. Story and 1LSP. Not so much south of Ft. Story, VB proper. If you go to these northern areas on the Chesapeake Bay shore, bring gallons of fly spray, as the flies will eat you for dinner, regardless of what you're wearing!! The flies drink Off for breakfast. Need something with oil in it or maybe vinegar. They're bad, and damn near invincible.

As expected, Virginia Beach resembled most other beaches in the country with a good number of women in cheeky swimsuits. I didn’t attempt anything as I was with my young family and simply didn’t have the time to do anything on my own.

@barefootthonh. Yes, to my knowledge, the public can use certain beaches at Ft. Story. The public has to enter the base at Gate 8, located at the eastern end of the base at Atlantic and 89th. Be prepared to show DL,registration, insurance, etc, etc etc. Some beaches are posted "Military ID required," others are not. Watch your parking. Lots of "No Parking" areas. Bring napalm to kill the flies.

Heading there this weekend. Unfortunately it doesn't look like much has changed on the legal landscape, and I don't think I'll get a chance to visit some of the nearby areas that allow thongs. So swim brief it is.
