Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Date Posted:08/19/2005 07:51:13Copy HTML

I generally wear a rio or bikini back to the municipal pool ( in Warrington ) at the lunchtime sessions. The rio backs used to get me a few strange looks but once you've chatted to the regulars then basically you're just accepted as being someone who likes to wear something a little briefer than the norm.

We sometimes go to an evening adults session our local pool in Lancs, and we both wear rio backs for those, strangely enough they sometimes "ride up" into a large thong and no-one seems to mind.

To touch on a subject which some folks have already mentioned about ladies swimwear. Have any of the other UK guys noticed that a lot more of the ladies are wearing two pieces ( anything from tankinis to tie sides ) these days ? It was always the case at the evening sessions but it seems much more common at the lunchtime sessions as wel - it can be quite distracting sometimes

I haven't actually been swimming for a while now but it sounds like maybe I should get back into it and stop worrying about bumping into someone I know or what others might think! Hmm, now I just have to find some time...

When I am at a pool with families and kids, I wear my Hom/Waveline/Bods 1 inch side bikinis. If there are just adults in the pool, I wear my Skinz/Joe Snyder rio/capri bikinis.

I'm a pretty large-framed guy, more like a brick outhouse than a fat slob.  I always "push the limits" when I go swimming anywhere, so when I found an indoor, olympic-sized pool not far away, I had a local seamstress make me a skimpy suit.  I was pretty sure that, since this pool was in the middle of a large development of families, and moms and kids were seen all the time at the pool, my thongs would not go over there!  So I had a string-side bikini made, with a normal, triangular front and a rio back (that showed some cheek).  Always pushing the limits!

The suit was also unlined and black-and-white striped, and of course, the white stripes turned transparent when wet.  Well, it wasn't long before the lifeguard approached me and kindly remarked that it appeared that my suit was wearing out, because of the transparency.  (I had seen that teens on the swim teams would wear thread-bare suits, one on top of another!)  That was the end of that suit!

So I had my seamstress make another string-side, rio-back bikini, and this time, I stopped at the front desk and asked the manager (a middle-aged woman) to pass judgement on it.  Examining it (out of the bag), she okayed it and I wore it without problems.  I think there were several elements at work in that huge pool, which at any one time would be used by exercising seniors in the shallow end and school swim teams in briefs in the deep end.  Most of the pool, the entire center area, was always reserved for lap swimmers going from side to side (75 feet!).  So the manager saw my skimpy suits being online with the "team suits".  But I could tell I had found the limits, and I never attempted to introduce a thong there.

Interestingly, people who complain about "sexy-looking" suits are typically mothers who claim they're complaints are about shielding their children from such a sight...but I notice that when I swim during senior exercise time, the seniors really watch me walk to the center, lap swimming area.  But when the shallow area is used by tots learning to swim, the moms are there with their guns drawn.  BUT:  Children pay no attention to adults walking by, no matter what they're wearing.  Protecting the children, my foot.

That is my experience also.  Kids don't pay any attention until they're 12-14, and by then, well, with MTV and all, what is there left to protect them from?

Until know I didn't find  a swimming pool that allows thongs or so (in Belgium). I allways ask before I go swimming, just to be sure that I don't get kicked out.

What I try to do is wearing skimpy bikini's with a smaller rear coverage. I have a suit that's like 2nd skin and adjustable in front and rear. After wearing it some time the rear coverage si creeping between my behind and looks and feels like a thong. Nobody makes any comment.

There is even a waterpark that forbids wearing bermuda shorts. Since the new rules I didn't go there, and don't know what they would say about wearing a thong.

Brain and Jazz skirt, you're right. Children don't pay attention to what you're wearing, they are to busy playing. It's only the older people that have second thoughts about your appearance.

At a public pool I usually wear speedos and often down size one due to being a good swimmer and not wanting the drag of looser items. I've never worn shorts (yuk) . I've worn other makes (Hom,  Kiniki)  with 3/4 and half backs, but only for adult sessions.

A few shorts wearers have made silly comments but they do go strangely silent when they try to show off doing front crawl and I overtake doing breast-stroke.

I've only ever once had a comment from a 'mother' at a pool and I silenced her , politely, by pointing out that my speedos covered a much larger area than her bikini

emj76. Bit disappointed to hear of your experiences with comments at the pool. I must admit I've never had comments made about wearing a speedo at a pool and it's sad to hear that you've had some. Like you, I'm a good swimmer and I have a pretty good physique which must either silence the insecure or something. The comment to the "mother" (the scariest people on the planet surely!) was a good one

I really think we need some pertinent remarks for shorts wearers. I don't want to go on the attack; ultimately I don't want to force my dress code on others but I don't think we need to take this. Any witty - rather than abusive - comments we can use?

In the last month I have been wearing a thong for regular exercise sessions at my health club pool.  I used to wear speedos or very small bikinis and recently worked up the courage to try a thong.  I am very discreet about it: I cover up with a small towel most of the time that I am walking around poolside, and I am careful to use the pool at less crowded times when there are no children.  So far I have received no comments, though I am sure people notice my thong when I am swimming laps.  It seems that around here, as long as you aren't behaving in a lewd manner or "flashing" people by walking around in a thong among big crowds, most people have no problem with thongs.

i mean i thought this a thong board! i haven't worn anything but a thong or a g-string to a beach or pool in over 4 years, and i've probably thonged 200-300 times in public!. if you are conservative and thoughtful of others, you'll have no problem.  i've never had anyone say anything negative, only compliments. believe me, most women could care less what you're wearing. most of the excitement is in your own mind, most people just don't care what you're wearing.   if you're around people from outside the country they have a completely different attitude about swimwear. american guys are just too hung up on this issue, trust me.

JM_Runs:

You are completely correct about asking someone if it is ok to wear a thong.  I have done that several times, usually at hotel pools, and always gotten a yes answer.  And you are probably better asking on the spur of the moment, possibly by phone, as the lower down the person you ask is, the more likely they will say yes.  Hotel desk staff are often young, and will answer quickly without too much thought.  Yes is their easiest answer, and they obviously don't care themselves.  Then once you have your yes, you are much better off if any problems develop later on (which in my case, they never have).

I really would like to waer a thong to the local pool but think that it may be a step too far, for me at least. I do accept that there has to be someone who starts the trend but I think it would take quite a brave soul here in UK to do it. I'd love to be proved wrong

For me, its been a gradual steps process. I started with short shorts, switched to standard speedos followed by 1/2 side bikinis the next summer. I got a rio back suit which I tried for a while and then started letting it slide up into my crack. Last summer, I switched to a real thong and can't wait to wear one again this summer at the pool.

@Mark: I know there are differing opinions on this but, for me, it's always best to ask first. Unfortunately, I was told thongs weren't allowed when I aksed so I've never thonged at a UK pool. Still, I'd love to do it one day!

Back to the main topic... although it's some time since I've been swimming, I go for the smallest speedo-type suit I can find. It seems to be the best way to down-size without giving anyone a feasible reason to complain.

I've always worn bikinis in the swimming pool for as long as I remember. But i became self concious when I came to N.america for college; where I started off wearing speedos as I saw some older men did as well (but mine were much smaller than theirs, I mean really small), but figured it was such a big deal to show your legs when I received a little comment. But now I continue swimming in my bikinis.

Swim laps in a indoor pool at the gym.  I have beening wearing thongs without any problems.

You have to pass by the pool to get to the girls locker room. Can't tell you how many times I've seen the women looking in the window to the pool as they walk by, or try to look but without letting you know they are looking.  Today had a lady stop with her 2 girls, not once but twice.

Today, when I got out, one of the instructors for a water class came in.  She said "I wish i had the body to wear a swimsuit like that", and  smiled as she said it.

I should of said she did have the body, but didn't.   Instead I said " I dont have the body quiet yet but working on it."

She replyed "You don't have much more to work on."

Needless to say, wear what you want. Go about it as if you aren't doing anything wrong. Then nobody will bug you.

Hey guys, I finally did it. I wore a thong bikini to a public indoor swimming pool in Britain (although initially I didn't intend too lol)

When I'm at  home I usually use the swimming pool at my college which is quiet most of the time and on numerous occasions its only me and my mates in there so I wear a one piece thong swimsuit.

A couple of weeks back my family went to visit friends of ours up in Scotland for the weekend and when we got there the daughter of the family (my age) suggested that we go for a sauna, swim, jaquzzi etc. so we decided it would be on the Sunday.

The only problem that I had was that I didn't take any swimwear up there with me. "thats ok" Donna Said,  "you can borrow some of mine". So I thought great.

When we were packing she opened her drawer and threw me a bikini which I just packed in my bag along with my towel etc.

Then we arrived at the leisure centre. we went into the changing rooms and started to put on our swimwear. First the top, then......I pulled out the bottoms of the bikini and saw straight away that they were thong bottoms I looked over to ask if she knew and she was standing there giggling. She had done it on purpose, but she said that she thought I'd notice at home which would have given me the opportunity to change them but here I was at the pool with no alternative.

She did offer to swap but I told  her it was no problem because none of the people there knew me anyway, even though I was quite nervous.

To cut a long story short I spent the whole time there wearing my thong bikini without any complaints. I saw a few people look twice and a guys eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw me get out of the jaquzzi but nothing out of the ordinary.

Sounds great fun. With a bit of courage its amazing what you can do. It's great that  you rose to the challenge set by your friend.

Are you really sure that you weren't aware that they were thong bottoms because like any thong bottoms there can't have been much to them!

Glad you wore them anyway and were able to turn a few heads in Scotland at the pool and jacuzzi.

lol, yeah I'm sure that I didn't notice that they were thong bottoms as she just handed me a bundle with the top and bottoms folded up so I just naturally just packed them without checking.

It was a good experience though after the initial nerves. The next assignment is to go to aerobics in a one piece thong lol (only joking I don't think I have the bottle to do that)

Sarah

Hmmmmm!

Aerobics in a one piece thong. Sounds great but it really would take some bottle but again it all depends on the exact style. There was a recent video clip (the past few weeks) of someone doing just that featured elsewhere on the forum. It all looked very professional with a model type girl strutting her stuff wearing a thong leotard(?) at an American aerobics class but it was all set up I'm sure.

However to wear one ( a thong leotard) at your local gym in the UK would certainly raise eyebrows. Males wouldn't object and would be secretly cheering you on. However such a class is likely to be virtually male free and you are unlikely to receive favourable comments from other females attending.

Nevertheless if you are brave enough go for it.

If you are talking about a slingshot thong (swimsuit style) you would have to be mega courageous to try and do aerobics in it. I wonder if anyone in the UK population has ever worn such attire anywhere in the UK be it at the beach, pool or otherwise!

Well if you go for it please tell us all about it or other occasions when your thong wearing might be considered risque.

lol I was only joking about wearing a one piece to do the aerobics in, as I remember the clip of the woman teaching a class wearing one. It was the actual video to the eric pryds call on me song. I would love to do it but definatly wouldn't have the bottle.

As for slingshots go, I do have one from Malibu Strings and have worn it on a beach on holiday, they are great for moving about to minimise tan lines.

Just to back up what Sarah said. I wear  a standard thong bikini to the local gym. I've have never had any complaints just a few double takes. I've never seen anyone else which is a real shame, I keep trying to get my friend to wear them, she has on holiday, but won't to the gym.

Hey guys, just to update you on my recent post in this thread. I finally got up the courage to wear a thong bikini to my local swimming pool where I live. Me and a group of friends decided to go for a swim and as our college pool is closed at the moment, so we went to the local leisure centre.  I wore my WW 475 ring top thong bikini with a triangle back.

Just to confirm what publicgirluk said really I had no problems just a few "double takes" here and there.  Its not all that a big deal after it just seems that way before you do it so good luck.

I still can't see me wearing my sheer 457's there yet though.  I'll save them for holidays.  I've even considered getting one of those string bikinis or the sublime invisible as they are called. They look fun for the beaches.

Sarah

Glad to hear that your wearing of a Wicked Weasel to the local pool/leisure centre was a success. It just takes initial courage. However you never know when somebody is going to complain when they see the size of the bikini you have on. Not me I may add!

Nevertheless I bet you turned a few heads when at the poolside. Its perhaps not so bad if others are wearing thong bikinis, but if you are the only one in the group then it must be even more difficult. It depends on how supportive your friends are. Some might encourage you to wear the thong bikini, maybe with a view to wearing similar bikinis themselves. Some may find your bikini extreme. It depends on your circle of friends and their lifestyle and morals. However there is always someone in a group who likes to push the boundaries when it comes to clothing and wear something sheer, brief , risque etc (friends comment-you're not going to wear that - are you?). Seems to me Sarah that you are that person.

As for sheer Wicked Weasels they might be just too much for the local pool - though I would like to see you try. Just appear equally shocked and innocent if pulled for wearing sheer microwear! I reckon they are OK for the beach though!

As for a Sublime Invisible. You have no mission of getting away wearing one of these at your local leisure pool or even college pool. You are likely to be asked to leave. You would make the pages of the Sun or Star newspaper though. Certalnly the Daily  Sport! They are definitely fit only for a beach and probably not in Cornwall. I have given my views elsewhere  on the forum about these and cage style microwear. I stll think its better to leave something to the imagination given even the minimal coverage offered by Wicked Weasel suits especially those generally called microminimus style. I would like to hear if you succeed in wearing any of  these styles - Invisible or cage - anywhere on the planet including the most highly secluded cove or beach. If you dare to wear those styles your friends will certainly comment unfavourably unless they are  very broad and like minded.

Anyway please keep on thrilling the locals and visitors in Cornwall with your Wicked Weasels and posting your microwearing exploits on the forum. Subject of course to the current ongoing terrible weather we are experiencing across the UK. How can we expect people to visit  the beach in this weather. Of course there is always the pool.

Regards

Well done Sarah!

There is always the risk that someone will complain but in my experience that doesn't really happen (only a few times for me). While some people may not approve they can't be bothered to complain either. As I have said elsewhere you have just got to be sensible, behave normally and not cause a scene.

"Its perhaps not so bad if others are wearing thong bikinis, but if you are the only one in the group then it must be even more difficult. It depends on how supportive your friends are."

I find it easy in a group/with others. I've hardly ever gone "solo" with a thong. Always with gf at gym or bf at gym/beach or away with work. It isn't about needing the support  (no one else wears thongs) more about safety for me. However, my friends don't mind being with me in my outfits and I guess it would be different if they felt uncomfortable being with me dressed like that.

Good job, Sarah; we all admire you.  I have also worn a thong on a few occassions when I knew I would be the only one, but I have also "chickened out" many times too.  It really is great once you get over the initial shock.

Us guys have different issues.  We are not worried about safety, but we are much more likely to get a negative reaction and complaints.  I haven't yet done it when I have known anyone else; to me that takes much more courage.  Maybe this summer.

Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Date Posted:05/23/2006 05:42:57Copy HTML

This is an interesting thread and one that makes me think about where I stand in relation to public thonging. The bar is definitely set much higher for men. Reading the various contributors I think I am somewhere in the middle i.e. I will wear a thong in public, sometimes, if the place and situation is suitable. Having said that, I've never - to my knowledge - had a negative comment or reaction.

As for wearing one at my local swimming pool -- it will never happen. I've never seen a woman wear a thong at an indoor public pool in the UK, so I very much doubt if a man could locally. I know it happens in some places - as Sarah proves - but I won't be in my local pool where I live.  The nearest I would get to it is maybe a rio back and even then I wouldn't spend much time on the side or walking around!

I have thonged in hotel pools where I know I will be unknown, and took a risk at the Center Parcs Aqua Sana (see Steam room thread), but even there I would've been nervous if it had been busier.

My wife wouldn't have the same degree of anxiety.  I'm sure and that is why we men come to this forum and discuss our experiences; we need moral support and reassurance for wearing something which, unfortunately, is still considered "different", or odd, or obscene, or stupid, or weird, or "gay" to the majority of people.  I know many other men pretend to be offended but would love to try them, and more females than would admit find it sexy, but cultural, or social or familial norms stop them.

I've never thonged in front of people I know - nor has my wife. That adds to the risk or thrill to a higher degree. There are a few friends I would be fine thonging with; they'd treat it as a big laugh or join in? Others no way. I would probably be OK thonging around my parents and one brother maybe, but not the other. In-laws.... NO WAY... far too uptight and repressed!! They'd die. Mind you they could be in for a shock at my brother in laws Carribean wedding; my wife says she will wear her WW at some point and she doesn't care what her mother says. She'd probably be shocked if she wore an ordinary bikini quite honestly!

Matchingthongs

I agree with all you say.I don't think we will ever see male thongers at UK pools. Personally  I don't find thongs particularly comfortable  having tried a variety of them, though I do think the small triangle style look best. (They look even better on the female form) I do however favour 1/2 and 3/4 back styles. All from Kinikithough I like the look of Prevail Sports stuff. However I would not wear them at my local pool. I have worn 3/4 style at other UK hotel pools (weekends away) and at a hotel pool on the continent. The 1/2 backs I saved for a foreign holiday and wore at the indoor pool( only pool available). I was very self conscious and only ventured into pool wearing them in early morning. I wasn't brave enough to strut about, nor would I want to but certainly the few people around and in the pool would have noticed the 1/2 back and some did do a doubletake.

I think wearers are a bit bolder when on holiday and when the temperature is up. Thongs are much more acceptable on the female form I have to say and that is generally accepted by the fact that women wear them more than men. However even then its a matter of picking the time and the place. I would like to think that most wearers use common sense and think of where they are thonging or wearing other microwear. People will on occasions be that bit more daring but all in moderation I say.  Its often a thing that people keep to themselves and partners. I don't think we are going to see a large  thonging movement at UK leisure pools. No doubt a few brave souls will oblige at the local pool, such as Sarah Thomas - Fantastic I say! Even more people might be willing to wear them at hotel pools and at places like Centre Parcs while further afield Uk wearers will be even bolder! I certainly would not discourage them! Indeed it is such a rarity to see microwear at any place in the UK.

I don't believe in offending people. However I do think that the occasional thong and microwear can help brighten up the day and raise a few eyebrows and smiles of those near by.

Mind you the weather in the UK had better improve significantly or microwear will become an endangered species. I thought the planet was meant to be warming up!

If I'm swimming at my gym, I wear a full back style, similar to a traditional speedo.  However, if I'm swimming laps at the pool at my condo. complex, I wear my thong.  I figure I lay out at the pool often enough in my skimpy suits, that most everyone that would be at the pool is used to seeing me in a thong/gstring anyways.

When it comes to pools and everyday swimming, I've sort-of gone the opposite way, partly because I'm a little overweight right now. I now work in Taiwan, and although it's warm outside, they don't heat their indoor pools so they are as cold as any I've been in, usually 15-20 celsius.

In recent warmer weather, I've been wearing swimsuits that look like cycling/running shorts, tight but made from a speedo-like fabric. With my (hopefully) temporary gut, it's almost like having a girdle and it makes me look better. ^_^

During the winter, though, I've started wearing specially made catsuits, a neck-to-wrist-to-ankle one piece bodysuit that covers everything. (In a strange way, though, they cover nothing.) They're made of a treated spandex that adds to buoyancy and keeps the swimmer warm. I also love the all-black look with a big coloured stripe down the side. I usually wear a g-string swimsuit underneath the catsuit to "keep everything in place", but it creates lines around the side and back of the suit. (That's unintentional, of course! O_-)

I actually enjoy the feeling of being completely covered by the catsuit, though when the sun comes out as do I, it's down to the minimum: the smallest speedo when I swim in Taiwan, and g-strings at pools and beaches when on holiday in other countries.

The thong-backed one-piece in the swimming pool sound really good.  I bet you gave the blokes a thrill! W ell done Sarah, Publicgirluk and Clds!

I can't say I've seen anyone in this type of suit in a pool -  I don't think I've seen anyone at a gym either although I've seen plenty wearing thongs over lycra shorts.  I suppose that's not quite the same thing, although once there was a girl wearing a thong back over white lycra while the second time another girl was wearing a thong over white lace type shorts.

BTW I know you say you're not very daring over here in the UK, but can I ask (both Sarah and the other girls) whether you wear g-strings on UK beaches?  I don't mean thongs with a piece of material at the back, but suits with just a single string between the cheeks or a pair of strings in a V running over the top of the cheeks.  I think these are extremely daring (even for girls) as both types leave your behind completely nude and hide nothing.

Though to be serious for a minute, this year I think was a bit like Davy as on my holidays I too chickened out of wearing my thongs.  Well to be honest it seems everyone was wearing board shorts - and even the girls weren't going topless or wearing thongs!  And this was on my favourite clothing optional beaches!  What has happened I asked myself?  So I wasn't about to be the only one in a micro thong.

Strangely enough, here in the UK I've been to the nudist beaches in Wales a couple of times and worn the very same thongs before stripping off and catching some all-over rays.  No second thoughts here, although of course in a way it's not quite the same thing!  But I still got a few glances as I changed into and out of my thongs.  Hopefully I'll get another chance to go before autumn and winter arrives.

Hi, Hopefully this week I will be going swimming at a public pool but I wasn't sure what sort of swimwear I should wear, my swim shorts or swim thong. I'm going with this girl from work (she knows I wear thongs although she has never seen me in one) and she said she doesn't mind if I wear a swim thong (infact she wants me to), she will also be wearing a white thong bikini but I wasn't sure if I should to. I have emailed the swimming pool twice to see if thong swimwear is allowed, both times I didn't get any reply.

Do you think I should go swimming in my swim shorts or swim thong, don't forget it is a public pool. Also if anyone has any stories or anything that will encourage me to wear the swim thong that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey good for you. i hope you feel that the positive replies give you the confidence to wear a thong in the pool. do post back to the board and let us know how you got on and where this pool is in the UK. the more people who wear thongs the better. good luck to you

ThongUK

Go for it. If your friend is wearing a thong too that should give you some confidence.

Nevertheless I would still pack another suit. just in case  Doesn't have to be dork shorts. Try a bikini style!

Kiniki do different sized backs with some half backs that might be more acceptable.

Good luck and keep us all posted on how your trip goes with reactions to your thong and that of your friend!!!

I just don't have any shorts to wear swimming. All my beach/pool  gear is string style. End of debate as far as I am concerned!

I'm guessing this is something you want to do deep inside but your anxieties, fears and concerns are holding you back. I know that personally, if I was on my own, I would struggle with lots of the same issues and LOTS of 'what ifs'... BUT you'll have a friend with you who's also wearing a thong (meaning (a) you won't be the only one, (b) much of the attention will be on her, not just you, and (c) it might just be seen as that little bit more 'normal' because there's two of you) and you clearly have lots of support from the thonging community here. My advice, bite the bullet and go for it. And take a speedo rather than trunks, just in case you do get asked to cover up... but here's hoping you don't and you'll love the experience. I love the feeling of swimming in a thong! Let us know how it goes!
