Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Congrats Mike1879 on taking your swimwear style at the pool to a new level. I can totally relate to your post as I felt the same way progressing to skimpier suits for swimming laps at my gym pool over the past couple years. While I thong regularly at the beach, the lake and a private pool - wearing even a 1" side speedo bikini at the gym pool was intimidating for me since so many other men were in regular shorts.

Over time, I did progress to a skimpier bikini and laying out on the sundeck at our pool after my swims. I initially would scrunge my suit up in the back as a thong to layout and tan and eventually wore a thong to the pool on a slow Saturday. Now, depending on the day and hours, I regularly wear a thong in the pool and on the sundeck. I occasionally get comments from ladies and stares from men, haha.

Good luck and you'll be in a thong at the pool in no time.

within a weeks time making trip to so cal for anniv party for family and friends, staying at hopefully nice hotel and looking foward to potential thong/g string dips in pool and hot tub, should be fun, and hoping to post more comments in this section...

I swim a daily mile at a very conservative Y' pool, always in a Speedo (or unbranded equivalent), and lately never anything larger than a Speedo Solar 1 or Sporti Eurobrief (from swimoutlet.com) which is similar but lower rise.  Other guys in brief briefs and women in bikinis occur, but rarely.  No complaints or comments.  I think being very fit and also always wearing a swim cap (to appear very serious about swimming) helps.  At other locations I wear much less.

Went the other day with my youngest son to the public swimming pool.I noticed the new fad in men's looks at the pool:overweight  - long board shorts - tattoos....
Almost 70% of men had this looks.
Sometimes the elastic band of the underwear also shows under the board shorts.
Speedo has launched its new summer swimming suit line for men..... square cuts, colourful patterns, to be worn higher on the waist...They look beyond terrible. The traditional and practical Speedos from the 70s and 80s are more than ever out of fashion.
Its like swimsuit manufacturers resist at any lengths to go back to male swimsuits designs that outline the shapes of the male anatomy. It must work ok on sales;  almost all men wear suits like that.

Swimming 20 laps every morning in a 1/2" side rio back Skinzwear bikini unlined in black. Feels great!

Most guys wear 2" side Speedos or boardshorts. Poor fools...;P

Agreed JM...the fat-gut, tatooed, waist-band out look does nothing for me either!

I always wear brief style (like speedo) at swimming pools. I think other kinds of swimwear for men that cover more than a brief are very ugly. Men are prudish and shouldn't be.

In thinking about this answear more, I guess the venue has alot to do with my response.  Here at home....board shorts just like every other suburban dork in the county.   Away on a domestic trip at some higher end hotel, I would absolutely have no problem with a square cut or speedo like bikini.  I doubt I would wear my muscleskins poser bikini or any of the other skimpier ones I have.   Away on a getaway vacation, no problem wearing a thong.  In fact, on my very first international trip (right after college with my girlfriend), I wore a thong at the hotel pool in St. Martin.

Depends on the pool. First, I don't ever wear board shorts. I haven't found any location where a bikini is not allowed/appropriate and, if that were the case, I just wouldn't go there! At the hotel pools locally, I will wear a thong. Travelling, I will ask and wear a bikini if told that thongs are not permitted. If permitted, I will wear a small thong or even a g-string. I was in Phoenix for a conference a few months ago and wore a g-string at the spa pool all day before the conference started.

Default suit is a rio back, unlined, skinny side strap bikini.  If I feel like the atmosphere can tolerate something more revealing (and I usually do), I wear a thong. If I'm in certain places where I know anything goes, I wear a mesh g-string.

i don't travel and frequent hotels very much, but before i consider checking in i always ask if it is permissible to pool sunbath in a g-string swimsuit......just about everytime this question takes them by surprise, but since i don't frequent the wall st chain hotels, they usually give me an agreeable answer.......then, when i go poolside and slip off my terry cover-up, showing that i am wearing nothing more than a very skimpy g-string, i get the usual curiosity looks and that is that........although most of society only approves of women in g-string suits, i have rarely had a problem with anyone calling me out, and i have never had management try to backwater on me..........more to the point, it has been my experience that most people mind their own biz and couldn't care less......of course, that could be becuase most people simply don't know how to deal and default......

personally, it is very exhilarating to be out on a gorgeous day, wearing only a risque g-string, showing-off my totally shaven bod, allowing 99 % of my physique to drink in the sunshine....to be honest, the only time i might get a disapproving look is when i'm wearing a spaghetti-strap slingshot.......for whatever reason, the slingshot g-string suit is a little too close to nude for folks to handle....

The largest suit I wear to the swimming pool is a Speedo Solar. I have several in different colors for laps. I also have a couple Waveline bikinis I really like for laps as they are a bit skimpier than the Speedos. When traveling I wear a thong whenever I can but sometimes sport something like a skinzwear posing bikini. It depends on the town, the time of year, etc. I've worn thongs to Sheraton hotel pools with others around and it was really exciting to strip down to my skimpy spandex Muscleskins and lay out. Got plent of stares but no one said anything other than other guys in speedos chatting me up, but they never mentioned my thong.

Never do anything larger than a squarecut trunk at a pool.  Most of the time it is hip brief with a 4 inch side, similar to the brazilian-style trunks.  I used to wear one-inch side bikinis but I guess as I gotten older, I've become somewhat more modest.  Never wear boardshorts...don't even own a pair and never will.  Really silly style for swimming!  Thongs are reserved for some beaches where thongs are not completely frowned upon such as Fort DeSoto.  Do thong in my backyard, and on the terrace of my favorite hotel in Cancun.

Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Date Posted:11/09/2012 10:23:13Copy HTML

It's been a while. Not been swimming too much this year, but getting back into the habit. Since my last posting (1/10/2011, this thread) I've ordered and received a red 3/8" side, Micro Narrow pouch, Sport back (BTW all my Muscleskins suits are Micro Narrow pouch).  I've worn Sport back suits before, but never with 3/8" sides. Worn the new suit a couple of times in the pool and, although a bit self-conscious even though I've been alone in the pool, I've been comfortable with it.

Today I wore a 3/4" side green Muscleskins thong. As (almost) always, I wear a pair of 1970s Adidas sprinter short shorts over, to give me the option when the time comes to enter the pool to keep them on or take them off. Today, pre-swim, in the poolside sauna which overlooks the pool, I struck up a conversation with a man and woman and felt this gave me an opportunity to test the reaction to wearing the 3/4" side thong I had put on under my shorts. So I took off the shorts in the poolside shower (rather than poolside), swam a few lengths in the thong, then returned to the sauna (with towel round me) to resume the conversation and see if any comments - there were none. Of course, they may not even have been watching me.

My gym is part of a national chain. Only a minority of gyms in the chain have pools, but I've been to one other where the pool is smaller, lower ceiling, less brightly lit, and fewer windows from other parts of the gym (cardio floor, stairs to changing rooms etc).  I had been thinking to try a thong there first, but have never got around to it.  In fact, I now think that working my way to wearing a thong in a bigger, better-lit, generally more 'open' pool has been the better plan, to develop the confidence where it matters, rather than trying out thong swimming in what is almost a semi-furtive or -secretive environment.

Still some way to go to full confidence (others in pool, 3/8" sides thong, no shorts over and leaving towel on side hook so I have no choice when I exit the pool but to walk in an uncovered thong to retrieve my towel). I still have some concern that wearing a thong when swimming front crawl could make it look as if I'm naked, hence cause offence,  because there's so little material, but I guess that this concern is something to be faced down.

Reviewing this thread, there was a suggestion of wearing a swimming cap to show serious swimming intent, I think I may adopt that idea (with goggles too).

And I may try swimming when there are several others in the pool, in my 3/4" sides Capris, just to give an opportunity for comments.  Even 3/4" Capris are much much briefer than anything else that other men wear. I don't want to offend, but I do want to enjoy!

Mike - well done on update. I have long stopped bothering about what other people think. I typically wear a J Snyder KINI to the pool - by far the briefest suit among all those wretched shorts. I do nothing to draw attention - or indeed avoid it. Start by ditching the Addidas shorts - just get on with it , act normally & wear what you want. I get the imprerssion others don't notice or don't care - any more than I do about their choice of swimwear.

Good advice, 'just get on with it'.  Should work fine . . . . until others notice, care, and comment.  Like to staff, who then tells you to cover up, others are complaining.  I tried thonging at my health club pool earlier this year, just home from a month of thonging on the beach in Naples, FL.  For several weeks it seemed to be going fine . . . . until others noticed, cared, and commented!

I do swim workouts five days a week at a family oriented Y' pool where thongs just wouldn't be accepted.  I do wear Speedo Solar 1 suits, much of the time.  I also wear very similar "Sporti" brand Euro cut briefs sold by www.Swimoutlet.com, which are a bit lower rise and a good price.  The swimwear compliments I get from the ladies are always when I wear my less minimal, leopard print, 3 inch bikini.  This is a hard-to-find color-style combo I got from Clothes to Pose in England.  I am usually the only Speedo there.

I swim regularly at a local council run community pool and here thongs would not really be appropriate, I wear a Jovana Low Rio brief - this has 1/2 inch sides and a fairly brief pouch and back. I alternate between a black or blue pair just to even out the wear.
Started out wearing square cut trunks as I really don't like the idea of those long dork "shorts", after only a few sessions at this particular pool, having got the feel of the regular crowd I switched to a genuine Speedo brief with 2 inch sides, even this was much less that the other males wore. Having been a regular at the pool for over a year I now wear the Jovana Low Rio and I have overcome the feeling that all eyes are on me. I swim for the exercise mainly, there are several people who I've made friends with at the pool and who have made no comment about my transition from the square cuts to the rio. I meet up with them in the pool and after swimming my 20 lengths we usually gravitate to the shallow end or the hot tub to talk.
I just act sensibly and confidently and enjoy the freedom of choice.

I don't own any swim suits other than thongs at this point.  If it's a real bad scene, I may leave my shorts on and lounge in a chair, but not often.  I can lay on my back in a chaise lounge, and no one knows for sure if it's a small cut brief or a thong.  If the crowd is right, I'll roll over or hit the pool, and then they know for sure.

|For four years now,I have been wearing squarecuts to the pool.I would prefer to be wearing less, but this is a good compromise. There are a lot of people I know from work there. No one has said anything at the pool or away.My wife likes the look as well. All is good.I was wearing a Skinz M61.The fit was great, but the material deteriated too quickly.I now have a Bodyaware suit.It doesn't fit as nicely as the Skinz but I hasn't fallen apart yet either.
Today at  the pool there was a fellow about my age and build wearing a bikini suit.It had no more than 1" sides and  less than a full cut back.My wife took notice.I may be moving into a smaller suit in the new year

Spark2100 curious about your wife taking notice of another males smaller swimwear.
What did she say to make you believe it was something to her liking?
Would she ever compliment another male wearing brief swimwear? If not why?
Did you ever ask her what particularly she likes about male in brief swimwear? Or is it just a shock of something different some male wears versus the ordinary dork shorts?

Never have i gotten a compliment on small swimwear from a woman... Have been told have a nice looking body but never specifically the brief swimsuit be it a skinny side skinz low rise rio, thong or 3/4 inch side brief swimsuit.. Is this because they believe it may lead to misunderstanding of arterial motives from them. While many times you will hear women complimenting other females on there bikini swimwear.....
Only feedback i get from wearing any swim briefs at the pool is when some women may stare at me longer then usual or have big grin... Also when females i seen before don't acknowledge me or pay any undue attention towards my swimwear, then suddenly notice by looking blatantly shocked at my new bikini briefs. Watch for uncharacteristic stares from women that normally don't care or do a subtle job not making it evident they notice my briefs.

When I go to the swimming pool on my bicycle, everything I take with me (phone, some money, ID doc) is in a fanny pack around my waist, with my towel around my shoulders (that way it is obvious I am on my way for a swim or on my way home). At the pool I hide my fanny pack under my towel and I have never had a problem. I used to cycle in just a bikini, with the pack on my side, facing the cars on the road, but with the warmer weather I started to go in just a g-string, in that case I put the pack on my back, anyone following me (by car or bike) just see the pack and think I am in my usual bikini.

Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Date Posted:12/29/2012 01:38:59Copy HTML

Yes there are two ways of reading this question, so I guess I'll answer both :-)

TO, the pool.......... when I'm at home, I'll wear either jeans or shorts, depending on the weather. When I'm on holiday staying in a complex, it depends on the vibe, but it is invariably a pair of tight square cuts with either speedo or thong underneath. I have been known to walk from my room to the pool in a thong, this was at a very relaxed Spanish resort.

AT, the pool.......when I'm at home, my gym pool doesn't allow thongs so it is a speedo style suit, I've worn them since I was a young competitive swimmer so don't really know anything different. At hotels or while on holiday I'll wear the least I feel I can get away with, depending on the atmosphere and who is around, so that square cut always comes off to a speedo and then maybe the speedo off to a thong and if circumstances allow the thong comes off to a 1/2 thong....... If you dont know the vibe you can't beat layering to cover every eventuality!!!!

Although when I'm on vacation, far , far, away from home, I will wear a thong (love La Vie En Rose for Men!!) to the pool for tanning and "dips" in the pool, when it comes to serious training (Masters swim and the like) I usually wear a Speedo Endurance bikini style.

Re:What do you wear in a public swimming pool?

Ok, this question when answered literally "to" the pool, that all depends on the pool. Since I own a pool and primarily swim in my pool I wear nothing because I usually will just go out my door to my pool nude, but if I am going to another pool like a hotel pool. I will usually the first time to the pool area wear normal street clothes with my G-string on underneath, and when I set up my location I will take my street clothes off and use the facilities, but I have also had extended stays in hotel that after the initial visit to the pool would walk down to the pool in my G-string because most hotel have separate "pool towels" and they don't want room towels by the pool.

I took my son to his swimming lesson at our local swimming pool;  I just sit down on the bench while he is done then we go back home.  It called my attention this young 30 something man at the toddlers swimming pool, with his kid and wearing a conventional pair of  'old fashioned' black 5cm speedo swimming suit.   He walked confident, and behaved as normal as everybody else.   You know what, it was so refreshing to see a guy wearing a  speedo, he wasn't fat, nor very muscular, probably just average fit.   No excessive body hair (especially on his back), but it was very impressive to see the almost magic combination of behaving naturally, wearing a 5cm side speedo, by a normal John bloke.   Something so "outrageous" according to our today standards, when men try to hide their anatomy under clownish like board shorts to the ankle.    I was wondering, what has happened to society lately, for men being so ashamed of their bodies.
Anyway, I almost felt like approaching him and giving him the thumbs up, for his courage and for his looks.   With so much negativity towards men wearing speedos, it might have been a tablet on encouragement to this guy to keep wearing something that makes him look good and very masculine.    But again, the blackness of our times came to my mind, to remind me that doing something like that could not be appropriate, what if he thought that I was ogling at his child, or what if he thought that I was stalking him, or what if everyone around thought that I was gay.
A few days later, I realise now that I should have said it.  Sometimes the fear of being different is contagious.  Whereas to polarise, by wearing a speedo where nobody does it, or making a positive remark when nobody would dare to, is actually invigorating.

It probably would be more beneficial to just try to strike up a normal conversation with him without mentioning what he is wearing. That's how I look at it. I'm sure he doesn't need encouragement, if he is already wearing it.

Everyone needs encouragement from people wearing minimal swimwear to the pool.. Women get compliments from other females also infatuated males on what skimpy bikini swimwear their wearing...Even if male is straight giving acknowledgment to another what swimsuit he has on isn't creepy.. Just say where did you buy it and that your looking for similar type of swimsuit.. Then you can compliment him what he is wearing...If a gay man says i look great in a particular suit i wouldn't feel offended or creeped out. Unless their focused only on it and stare then it becomes weird and I wonder what their intentions are...
Nice to hear as a male wearing minimal swimwear some positive feedback from the ladies once in a while. Yet it's true comment made that when a male wearing something like a minimal swimsuit people assume he is confident thus no encouragement is needed. Yet in my opinion its not always the case, many men feel uneasy or uncomfortable around others knowing their the only one wearing specific swimsuit surrounded with dork shorts... Sometimes even the most confident male needs a compliment once in awhile..

Kevin, That was good advice.  When people see some people accept a man with a minimal suit and are not ostracizing them, they too will accept the man as non threatening. It is a sort of "Ok, if those people have checked him out and figured he is not a threat I will go with that."

I find people watch me when I am on the beach in a thong, and when they see others greet me in a friendly way, be it life guards or just folks at the coffee shop, I can often feel their alert state switch off.  It is like a dog.  If the owner greets you as a friend the dog follows the owner.  When you first arrived the dogs ears were up, body stood up tall full alert, but once the owners friendly greeting indicates you are not a threat it relaxes, the ears fold down and the tail starts wagging.
People are a bit like that.  Man in thong - full alert - what is going on here -  is there a risk? Then they see others greeting the thonger. being friendly or setting up beside him, and the dinosaur part of their brain says, accepted by others in the pack, must be ok. In effect the smoke alarm in the base of their brain switches off when they see others accept you as you are.

So Kevin's advice is spot on.

Jm_runs your analogy of a dog is amusingly correct on the behavior of people seeing a male in unique, provocative clothing..
Seen the same happen to me where talking to someone who i have a relationship and is known to others are shocking surprised knowing me. Peoples curiousity is intrigued wanting to befriend me or are confused why that person knows me. Sometimes people find themselves to shy to chat thinking i'm out of their league to talk.. While they hear gossip or word of mouth that i'm okay normal guy then others feel more relaxed or excited to chat with me...While at times it backfires knowing a  person and others will feel angered envy towards me only because i spend my time talking only to my female friend... Thus the people feel i'm ignoring them and not paying attention or notice their presence. Sometimes a female friend will call me over using  me talking about a benign issue that we disscused before. Only to make other group of females behind us staring upon me as a rouse to get back at their conceited atitudes towards her. While the group of conceited females are angered that i pay no attention to them only to my female friend. Often i will see the group of envious females leave in anger disscusing us... How does she get him so interested in her?.. My female friend loves the attention or fallout when others see us together. Suppose we use each other knowing others intentions come clearer when we are chatting together. Peoples opinions change towards me from the female side that their initial assumption of me being gay or weird and non-approachable is false. Makes other females radar siren go off louder when they now see me..
While my female friend has big grin getting some revenge towards females who may made disparanging remarks of her appearance in the changing room. Using me as some sort of tool to get back at them knowing they maybe attracted towards me while being to shy to start up a converstion with me.

Right after my last post,I started wearing a bikini style suit at the pool. My wife and I started going swimming early in the morning when we thought it would not be too busy. There are up to 4 regulars that are there every week when we go, all men in the 40-55  age range.

I have two suits that are similar, both with 1/2" sides. One has a fuller back than the other. The fist couple of time I wore the fuller suit with no issues. Swimming is so much more enjoyable with less cloth covering your body. After a couple of trips I started wearing the smaller suit. The guys are not paying attention to me. They do love the brazilian  bottom my wife wears, my wife likes the attention and the female attendant is very friendly. Most of all I feel good.

In the evening when we go with our son, I still wear a square cut. My Bodyaware suit fell apart. The one I have now is much thinner material and is quite actually revealing.

Now summer is getting closer we are not going to the pool as often. After a summer of wearing a G string in the yard, the square cut may go away altogether.

Just like what I wear to the beach, what I wear at a pool depends on the location and local rules or mores. If possible, I will wear a fairly tight thong for swimming laps and a G-string if just hanging around, especially in hotel pools. If the location demands it, I will wear a small bikini but NEVER dork shorts.

Stayed overnight before an early flight at The Holiday Inn hotel at Manchester Airport (UK). Swam in hotel pool wearing firstly a Kiniki Cuba Tanga (royal blue and lined pouch with 1/2 back) but as confidence grew after first couple of minutes went back to locker room and changed into JS Kini in light blue, both worn over a stainless steel xxxx ring. Pool was fairly quiet with about six or seven others swimming, no comments or odd looks.

Returned a week later after flying in from Denmark and stayed at same hotel. Swam again in evening wearing the JS Kini and ring. Before checking out the following morning decided as I had plenty of time to enjoy an early morning swim. This time I wore a JS Thong in black still with the xxxx ring. Used sauna (wearing Thong and sitting on a small towel). Jumped into pool to swim laps. Pool was quiet until a group of others arrived, all the gents wearing dork shorts and ladies in onepiece. I just carried on swimming laps but finally had to exit pool to grab breakfast. Had to walk length of pool to retrieve my small towel so all had the chance to see my bare buns. No comments! Showered with just the xxxx ring on and then dried off and changed with several others in locker room, Returned hotel towels signed out and pool attendant simply asked if I had enjoyed my swim. Sure did!

I have been travelling more and have come across pools that say NO to thongs. I have discovered the extremely low Japanese bikinis from ISwim or TXM and have a few of these to wear when thongs won't fly. I have just had a few very low bikinis made by Something Wild in California and Ebabee as well. Came out extremely well! I tried to get a very low rise bikini made by Muscleskins, but it didn't fit due to the changes in sizing criteria. When Jupiter refused to do anything about it except refer me to the "notes" section of his website, I gave up on that manufacturer.

Skerbeach - you confirm my own experience wearing skimpy gear - just get on with it, avoid drawing attention, & it all becomes a non event. Recently I have been wearing an Intersparta Zacros to the local pool.

Travelling around, I've found the large chain hotels are invariably thong tolerant. The staff you see don't care what you wear. They are just small cogs in a big wheel, there to do their assigned tasks as quickly as possible and go home. Other guests don't know what's acceptable and what isn't, so even if they are somehow offended they aren't likely to complain.

As a full time thong underwear wearer, I have yet to wear a swim thong in public yet.  The closest I have been was various pair of trunks intended for bodybuilding posing (I am not a bodybuilder by the way) at swimming pools, both public and in hotels.  Reading this board gives me the extra push to take the next step.  Our weather here in the UK is not really conducive, so it's likely to be on holiday in some sunny location.
Anyway, we are currently starting to plan a family week next year to Menorca, so as a regular reader of this board, I looked up what there was on Spain and I am very encouraged.
Now here's the thing - if I do decide to wear a swim thong there, it's going to be a baptism of fire! In attendance are likely to be ... wait for it ... :my wife (not too much of a problem because she obviously knows about my underwear and she knows what I'm like and almost gets it);my eight-year-old daughter (she takes her cue from my wife on the light-hearted and affectionate mocking);my mother-in-law (yes really! She knows I wear thong underwear because she's seen the washing in our house, so the secret is out but she's still of that generation and quite conservative);my brother-in-law (also quite conservative and blokey and has no idea of my underwear choice);brother-in-law's girlfriend (could be his fiancee by then and also has no idea either).
So there it is folks.  Any comments and/or advice would be welcome.
