I have a few UW thongs that could be worn as swimwear, and I have done so.

My first thong experience on the beach was in a ManStore red mesh strip string.  While it was a bit see-thru when wet, it was by far the skimpiest string I owned, which was the reason why I worn it that day rather than my regular swim thongs which had more coverage.

Now I have many Olaf Benz swim thongs that are as skimpy as that Manstore string, so I'll be wearing those to thong at the beach.

I have some of the Olaf Benz and Manstore thongs Some of their thongs are made for the beach, some obviously are not, and some are marketed as underwear but will work on the beach because they are made from quick drying technical fabrics, not cotton. If you avoid the light weight, white or partly transparent fabrics some of them make very good beach thongs. Not only are they often made and finished better than most thongs sold in the US,A but on quite a few the cut and finish is very like a beach thong. Some of the darker technical fabricates are just as good at full coverage, even when wet. Just be aware that some of their fabrics look solid when you see them on the internet but when you get them in person they may turn out to be to translucent for the beach.

Not too long ago I found an old Prevail Sport thong in my drawer. Thought it would pass for swimwear (at least at Gunnison beach), so i wore it.  It worked just fine

One time when we were on our way to south beach, we were concerned that our luggage was not going to make it from the airport.  We got to the hotel first and there were some issue with the baggage (which had our swimsuits in it).  My wife response was funny...she looked at me and said "I'll be fine, I'll just go in my underwear"  She was wearing her usual....front close bra (which she would remove) and g-string.  She continued "You're going to have a problem though"  (I dont wear any underwear).   Obviously it was not going to be a problem for her.   The funny thing....our suits arrived , and Michelle changed into a wicked weasel 456 g-string bottom and triangle top (which she removed when we got to the beach).   Her bra was bigger than her weasel top, and her underwear G was bigger than her 456.....She would have been less exposed in her undies!!!

In all the years I've been thonging, I've probably been seen more at pools or the beach in underwear, rather than swimwear.  That's changed in the last 3 or 4 years, now that I finally have some swim thongs though.  I always figured that the sheer fact that a man was in a thong would be enough of a shock for most that they'd never notice, or even think to check, that I was wearing underwear instead.  Most often it was women's underwear as well.  Many womens' styles have no obvious trim and such that gives it away as underwear, and come in lots of interesting colors, patterns, etc.  There was something just a bit naughtier about knowing that I was wearing a thong panties where people could see me in them.

My ex-wife used to wear only tiny lace g-strings on the beach which were obviously underwear even on nude beaches. She liked me to wear sheer when wet suits on the more adult beaches but I went nude on the c/o beaches.

I've worn nylon stretchy undies in a hotel pool several times.  They look like a Speedo so no one even notices.  Most of mine are made by Jockey so I have to wear a pair that doesn't have the Jockey lettering on them.

Not sure how I missed this thread....
I wear underwear thongs on the beach often.  The reason is one stated by someone earlier.  I like to drop by the beach, lake, pool, etc on my way from someplace.  And it's so convenient to simply strip down to my underwear and go.  It's also kind of a thrill knowing that I'm wearing unlined underwear, not a "real" swim thong.  Of course, the underwear I wear in public is the type that pretty much passes as a swimsuit.  I don't think anyone really knows that I'm not wearing an actual swim thong.

If you look around on many northern California beaches, you will see quite a bit of underwear being used as swimwear.  The hook styles are ladies' tops are one clue.

a couple of months ago I found myself with some spare time between meetings and near the beach - but no swimsuit. So i stripped to my undies which were string-bikini style, and bunched the back into a thong.
front was white and cotton-lycra - became somewhat see-through when I was in the water - but that's life.....
not the most comfortable, and I do admit that I stripped my undies off when in deep enough water and hung them on my shoulder until time to get out, when I had to get "dressed" agin, even minimally.
no problems, a few glances from some gals...... and a few people turned back for a second look when we passed each other while walking.
though I must say - a thong in stretchy swimsuit material wins hands down for comfort

I have Joe Boxer and Fruit of the Loom colored thong underwear, and they are more comfortable to wear on a beach where there are alot of rocks and sticks that wash up from the gulf waters. A good alternative to a thong, however I usually frequent for the most part, thong friendly locations.

Anyone come across women sunbathing in their street clothes, such as their underwear bras and underwear? I had that experience a few years ago. I went to a local beach after work to mellow out and sat down at a bench and noticed a woman on a blanket with friends in underwear. One woman turned over and laid up buns up in a thong. This was in a fairly busy area next to people throwing a fresbee around, two guys and a woman. They woman made a negative comment but the guys did not. I made soft of a "so what" comment to her and she shut up.

As I and many others have noted before, it seems so silly to make a distinction between the two, but many people do. And I also find it quite amusing that many women will get extremely upset if their underwear accidentally shows, but they won't hesitate to wear far less when on the beach. Many years ago in SoBe I went shopping for a thong swimsuit. The store's policy was you had to leave your underwear on when trying on any swimsuit. Fortunately I was wearing briefs, so this wasn't a problem, but I looked rather funny, because so much of the underwear was visible underneath the thong. Furthermore, the mirror was nowhere near the dressing room, so I spent considerable time walking around the store. Given that this was SoBe, I got more strange looks and snickers in that store than anywhere on the beach.

In Florida it is common to go commando under your shorts. Too hot for underwear.
However when going to yard-sales we often wore swimsuits, thongs or similar under our clothes, so we could strip off and try on a pair of jeans on the spot.

Most suits I wear at the beach are placed under the header "Underwear" at the webshops. I don't see much difference. When it comes to swimwear, the collection is most of the time very limited and also not as skimpy. As long as the suits are not labeled "Underwear" at the outside I don't care. A few times in the past I have been at the beach unplanned and laid out in my underwear. My underwear was never as big as boxershorts so it ws no big deal. Only the whities became totally see-thru when wet. ;)

I don't own titie whites, and avoid swimsuits and thongs in white, or with white trim, or white binding on the edges, because they look more like underwear.

To the beach I will wear a suit that is the right style and color, no matter if it was intended as a swimsuit or underwear, so long it provides proper coverage.
If partly transparent or translucent then reserved for just around the home or on the boat.

I have seen girls wearing their underwear at the beach.  It is very apparent that it is underwear but it does not bother me.  It did not seem to bother others although one girl ran down and sort of stared at her.  You never know what people are thinking.  She could have just been processing it.  She just kept running by.  Although you could probably tell from up close that they are underwear, you cannot tell from afar.

I wear only nylon underwear to the beach. Slightly sheer is best and the microfiber fabric is most comfortable. My favorite thong is Gregg Homme Torrid HyperStretch. It's truly hyper-stretch. https://www.dealbyethan.com/Gregg-Homme-TORRID-Thong-Underwear-Aqua-87404 If I need a bikini/Speedo, I wear Jockey for Her "No Pantyline Promise" bikinis or string bikinis - they are hyper-stretch as well. Black or other dark colors are fine, and I've never had a complaint. These are the only briefs I wear. https://www.jockey.com/catalog/product/no-panty-line-promise-tactel-bikini https://www.jockey.com/catalog/product/no-panty-line-promise-tactel-string-bikini

This summer I've bought the Maidenform Tailored Thong in prints and solids. The medium size fits well. I'm sure I could wear a black one on the beach and no one would think twice. The thing I like about them is they have the "taped" edges so there's no elastic in the crotch.

Re:Underwear on the beach

I don't wear 'tighty whites' on the beach.  However many of my 'thongs' or 'g-strings' I do wear on the beach, or in public, are marketed as underwear.

The ones I don't wear are the ones with wide elastic waist bands boldly stamped with underwear brand names.  While colorful, these seem to derive from the 'tighty white' tradition, are often not designed to minimize coverage, and when they are the rears turn out to be jock straps instead of thongs.

From the other direction, many Chinese made underwear is styled like swimwear.  The colors and patterns are like men's swimwear and swim-thongs. The fabrics are spandex or nylon rather than cotton. From a distance you can't tell if it is a swim thong from a US manufacture like PrevalSport or Skinzwear,  or if it is a Chinese knockoff.

About the only difference is the Chinese 'underwear' thongs are often lighter: They are not the heaver bullet proof spandex of the 1980's swimsuits, like the iconic Speedo brand thongs. However US manufactures are also turning to lighter fabrics, for example the "Thin-skin" fabric of the aforementioned Skinzwear brand. So there is no practical distinction between 'underwear thongs' and 'swim thongs', except maybe in the colors and decoration.

Some of the Chinese color choices, often in dark red or strong blues, often with accents like 'racing stripes', look more like traditional swimsuit spandex designs than some of the fabrics used by US makers.

Thongs in light colors that go transparent when wet, are cotton, or decorated with lace and frills, are obviously underwear.  Such thongs are more likely to make other people uncomfortable than they might otherwise be, because they are so obliviously underwear, and you are flaunting it. There seems more social prejudice towards thongs that are obviously underwear than ones that look like swim thongs.

On the other hand most people will politely ignore a person who has come to a beach or lake without being prepared to swim, who then strips down to their underwear to take a dip. And with all things thong, women face less prejudice for appearing publicly in underwear than men do. Many current styles of women's swimsuits having lace inserts and other underwear crossover styling. As Tobias said above, for men, the key is picking the right colors, fabrics and fit.

I used JM_Runs advice and found they are all very good for running, swimming, and general wear. All have adequate space for the typical American “gear”, and the darker colors are not transparent when wet. I’ve bought extras of the ones I like the best in expectation of needing to replace them from constant wear. But they’re cheap, and it’s painless to buy more, especially when compared to the brand-name thongs available. Thanks JM!

I do wear my underwear as a bikini at the beach. This is what I normally wear: https://www.danielalexanderunderwear.com/products/daniel-alexander-da608-brazilian-back-string-bikini I have a 32" waist and wear size small (they are stretchy). They ride up my ass so they expose almost as much as a thong. They are a lot lighter weight than a typical swimwear bikini. I have to be careful if I am in the ocean becasue the waves can pull them down easily. I have atleast a dozen of these in various colors and wear them every day as underwear. My wife calls them my boy panty

@min976, I wouldn't consider that Daniel Alexander bikini as underwear. I know they advertise it as underwear on some websites but it is made out of nylon/lycra which is what most swimwear is made from. I would consider anything made out of cotton or cotton blend to be underwear. Anything nylon, lycra or combination would be considered swimwear but could also be worn as underwear. I wear thongs daily as my underwear of choice and most are actually considered swimwear. I love that Brazilian style bikini for the same reasons that you do but I totally agree that you have to order a size (or two) smaller because they are very stretchy. Happy thonging!

Anyone see women wearing casual wear to the beach and laying out in their underwear to tan?? I saw a woman do this while I was eating a sno-cone. I thought she had a regular thong bikini on but nope, underwear. She flipped over to tan her butt and she had a g-string on. She spread her legs and cheeks and got the full sun exposure! She was an Asian lady and they seem to love their thong bikinis and others like there is no tomorrow.

I never have worn underwear that looks like underwear to the beach. However most of my iSwim bikini's and thongs are sold as underwear. But iSwim's WET fabric, which I like very much, is almost the same like the lycra fabric mostly used for swimwear. It is composed of 88% polyamide/12% spandex, and a little thinner compared to swimwear fabric. You only will notice the difference when wearing a suit made from this fabric. It has just a bit more comfy feel. The darker colors (black, navy and even royal blue) will not get see-through when wet. The lighter colors might get more or less see-through, but darker colors suit me better.

This habit of some young men of wearing underwear in public ought to stop! There are a few events at Hippie Hollow, our local clothing optional park on Lake Travis, where this is happening. I’ve been really put-off by these guys sporting around in jock straps and underwear with huge logos. I’m always nude, as are a most of the crowd and although I am sensitive to their modesty, it just looks stupid. Maybe it’s a generational thing? There are options for sexy garments that aren’t obviously underwear!

So if you're offended by this understand that these guys probably don't know much about the world of mens minimal swimwear. The underwear is more readily available and I see a gay guys culture thing.... So just ass we might wear some illegal thongs at a CloOp venue they're doing their thing. Now if you're offended by clothing at HH understand it's a CloOp park not mandatory nude like a nudist camp.

pikeman: I think part of the wearing of underwear with huge logo thing is that most men only buy whatever underwear is on mainstream store shelves. 95+% of what is on the store shelves are boxer style, usually with the manufacturer's name on the waistband in bold letters. I'd also hazard a guess that most men aren't inclined to search for minimal underwear as we on this site are. It's just a societal norm that most men don't spend a lot of time being preoccupied with underwear--or swimwear, for that matter. Even if they can conveniently buy minimal underwear on the net. They just don't think to do it.

Who says you cannot wear it to the beach? I have seen women wear underwear to the beach with no intention of going into the water.

I once sat down at a picnic table eating a snow cone and some lady I noticed nearby was wearing her underwear. Her skirt and blouse was nearby and she was with some friends. Pretty soon she flipped over to reveal a g-string and then spread her legs. A tiny g-string at that. She might as well been nude :)

Last night, while discussing cloths for other events, I mentioned that one of the young women on the group paddle last Sunday was wearing a fabulous green bra and panty lingerie. It was partly transparent before it even got wet. She rocked the outfit. Her friend had a tiny violet string thong bikini. While a good number of the women on the paddle were wearing thong bikinis, I recognized a few that are sold on Ali Express as lingerie sets. One friend had a marvelous asymmetrical top that was party mesh net and the rest covered with silver sequins. We have a mix of ages for the paddles, with most of the people being middle aged or older like me. There was a big contrast between us and the dozens of skinny young Miami women (all in tiny thongs) that were partying on the rafted up rich men's yachts. There again, while paddling past I recognized some of the bikinis and swimsuits on the young women are sold as lingerie. One young women was wearing a stunning semi-transparent red thong plunging bodysuit. I guess she was initially a little uncomfortable, was wearing shorts over the top when we first paddled past. However she lost the shorts by the time we paddled past when returning home. When out on the water I don't see many men setting out in thongs, except the ones I convince to wear one when out paddling with me. However these days I do see more men in speedos. Then there are the many men who wore designer underwear or speedo under their board shorts. I know because and after seeing me, on the urging of their girlfriends or shipmates, they pull of the board shorts and low and behold, there is the speedo or speedo like underwear they wanted to wear, but were too shy to initially reveal.

I don't own a single thong swimsuit - all of my thongs are considered underwear and I'd say about half could pass as swimwear (and have). I purposely buy thongs that can be used as swimwear since I love to lay outside and go to the beach in a thong. That's what makes thongs so great! I just decide what mood I'm in before I lay out and pick an appropriate thong!

Lately I've found that an unplanned trip to the beach can make me happy I'm wearing a thong that's underwear and swimwear. Just park, drop your shorts and walk out on the beach. On the way home just give enough time for your thong to dry before heading back to the car. Mesh / tan thru thongs keep the tanlines away and dry very fast. If I think I might be able to get to the beach that day I'll apply sunscreen under the thong when I dress in the morning so I don't risk sunburn on the C and B.

Tried to read through this thread to answer my question before I ask but couldn’t find any specifics and a lot of info was dated. I actually don’t own any specific swim thongs but have loads of underwear thongs and since I’ve only thonged publicly when it’s been really really quiet I wondered if my doreanse aire thongs or hom plume string thongs would be appropriate for a busier beaches? They are microfiber and have great coverage but the waistband is branded and looks like underwear if you know the brand. I also often wear black cotton thongs always pretty skimpy with string sides when hot tubbing with the girlfriend and notice the colour fades or they turn brown with the chlorine bleach in them. So I guess my next question is how does hom plume or doreanse aire string thongs hold up to the sea, sun, chlorine if anyone has experience?

I rather like the Doreanse Borderline. The thick waistband, to me, makes it not look like underwear (even though the Doreanse name is embossed on it). It's also not transparent. I regularly wear it while working around the yard.

I think they've discontinued it, though, since on most websites they have very few in stock. Isn't that the way it is? You get to like a particular thong style, and then it gets discontinued. (So I end up ordering a lot.)

@Maxtlatl I did a quick search for doreanse borderline and what came up was the micro modal gstring I already have. Is this the one you meant? Because it has a tiny waistband and cotton like pouch which I think looks more like underwear than the aire thong and would feel a bit more anxious in this than the other.
